Like*ine a happy New Y ear. Hartwell needs a barber shop. I’p goes our stacking to-night. Last Sunday was the shortest day in the year. Lggnogg • We seldom ever—wall hard ! ly erer—refuse. Next year is leap year, girts; but look before you 1 leap. Capt. Peck haw had his dwelling on the square re-shingled. And to-morrow in Christmas, sure enough. Ain’t ycr glad ? There will be a Christmas tree at Mill town Academy Christmas Day. Simply an advertising sheet next week. Christmas comes but once a year. Fancy groceries and confectioneries for Christmas, cheap, by Page 4 Maxwell. Quite a large number of Carolinians were in Hartwell trading during the past week. We think our handsome supplement this week will make up for our nominal paper next week. Hot auppers among the descendants of Ham arc getting to be annoyingly numer ous in this burough. Col. W. Y. Holland lit in Hartwell last s-eek. When Bill says a innn wis cow- I hided he sticks to it. A man was arrested on Saturday night i tried and fined by Council for shooting a pistol on Elbert street. Miss Mamie Shirley, from the neighbor hood of Bowersville. spent a few days with her friends in this place last week. We arc glad to say that the family of Jas. B. Alford, who have been so alHict cd with typhoid fever, are all getting well. Our K. B. Benson is confined to his bed with diphtheria, but is doing as well as could be expected. Johnnie is getting well. A. R. McCurry, wc understand, lias purchased the store and lot which he now occupies. It is one of the best stands in town. Ten elegant latest improved Sewing Ma chines just received and for sale at the low est prices, cash or credit, at E. B. Benson & Co.'s. We notice in the little railroad towns that Ixiuise l’omeroy is giving temperance lectures. Wonder what kin Bbe is to Brick Pomeroj*? We have received the Daily Gleaner, a new evening paper published in Atlanta, at the low rates of 10 cents a week. It is worth the money. William Miller, our most genial friend from Anderson, called in to see us Satur day. He had a note and wa- hunting the man that signed it. v ~%fin A. Hairston, who is one of the best farmers in the county, sent us Satur day a half bushel of the finest turnips we have seen this season. John A. Wilcox's apprenticeship ex pires to-day, and he shakes off the Devil's hoofs and stands forth a journeyman prin ter —and a good one, too. The Committee of arrangements if the Sunday Schools’ entertainment are request ho meet at the Academy Wednesday b;;e- n k-g. to perfect arrangements. M Leisey Shirley died at the residence of Jdygtham Weldon, in this count}*, on ! the aged 73. She was a member of Reed Vcck Baptist Church. i Messrs. ’ltlw. Schaefer and Wifl Snow, of Bowersvit i paid us a visit Saturday. ; Schaefer is a fin. business man, and would be a great addition to Hartwell. The question as y> where the depot should be located is creating a great deal of discussion. a.inoirg_ouE. i>.i/nns~ ft's&Aßtf To' be a case of many men of many minds. The Resolution Sunday School, a half mile cast of T. L. McMullen's mill, will have a Christmas tree at 7 o'clock Christ mas night. Everybody invited to attend. The Athens Watchman has a frightful picture in it, and just under it is “Mrs. Bushes’ Specific Cure.” Oh, I.ordy ! ain't it awful to have to be cured by such a picter! Prof. Pewfc returned from an extended visit to Athens on Saturday. The classic city seems to have agreed with him. lie is enthusiastic over the virtue of the min eral spring located there. We learn there is a movement on foot to get up an excursion to Klberton during the holidays, and that Nancy Hart will make the round trip, provided satisfactory ar rangements can be made. The bridge across the creek this side of Mrs. Elizabeth Teasley's is in a desperate condition. If it is not repaired soon we doubt not but some serious accident will be chronicled at an early day. Don't forget to attend the ralHc at Jim Webb's store on Christmas day. For 25 cents you may get an elegant picture or watch. The beauty of the plan is, that there will be only ten chances on each article. J. Q. Donnald, our tinsman, found in his store one day last week a pocket-book containing over SI,BOO, and a number of valuable notes, lie restored it immediate ly to its owner. An honest man is the noblest work, &c. We have warned our people repeatedly through our columns to be on their guard and look to their locks and windows, and some of our people have given heed to us ; but not7vithstanding the burglars continue their work. On Friday night last the rear window of ('apt. Peek’s store was broken open and entered. His desk was ransaok- ed and his papers thrown hither ami thither, but the thieves found no money, as the Captain keep* it elsewhere. He says he don't know what they took from the store. On the same night the back w indow of W. H. Stephenson's store was broken open, but as he has a secure safe the rascals could not get at his money. They left two ■urns, with good helves in them, iu his store. Like Capt. Peek, he cannot tell whatthey took from the store. This thing is getting to be too numerous. Something should be done. Our worthy Marshal does his duty, but he cannot be all over town at flic mme time. We should have a strong patrol at nights, especially during Christ mas week, and our merrhants would do well to lay in a supply of burglar guns. One day last week, as Mr. James Driver left town enjoying a little foretaste of Christmas, and arriving about Rundown near the tanyard branch, extended the i courtesy of riduig behind him-to a “ gem- I man of color,” who, after enjoying the I ride for a mile or so, suddenly left Mr. | Driver. Soon after the latter discovered ; that eighty dollars was missing, lie came back to town and sued 1 out a warrant against Lindsey Adams, colored. The trial came up the next day, when Lindsey established an alibi, the State being repre sented by J. H. Skelton, Esq., and the de fense by Horn A. U. McCurry. A war rant was theu sued out against Charley Calhoun, colored, who wan brought up for trial the same evening, the same counsel appearing in th oaso. Aa the parties were starting out of the front door of the court house to go up in the court room for trial, the vigilant eyes of Lee Linder, Esq., who never fails to see anything iu the shape of 1 money, discerned a small, pocket-book ly ing in the'passw'ay of the courthouse. It proved to be stuffed full of greenbacks, and upon examination was identified as Driver's money. Mr. Driver was sent for, his monev.paid over to him, the prisoner ; paid flic costs and the warrant was dis missed. The negro, Charley Calhoun, 1 hails from Anderson, S. C., and is a bad character. Marrying time has come, and every (Yiristinas the boys and gals mute off in this county by the score. We want focall their attention to one important thing, that is to take a fair and honorable start in life, and they never casi expect God to prosper them through life unless they pay the preacher for making them one. The cus tom of this coftnt'y is to call a preacher, perhaps on a stormy night miles from home and give him nothing hut his supper. What would a lawyer think if you were to otier to pay him for important services by giving liim a meal of victuals? A wife that a fellow can't afford to pay live dol lars for ain't worth having. Who can describe the deep joy* tho pura and fervent affection which glows in a young mother's countenance, and tills her swelling heart as she bends over the cradle of her first-bom, and beholds him nestling there in the sweet repose of infancy? No rude dreams to disturb hfs slumber—uo foot-fall is allowed in the hallowed room where baby sleeps. Although her love is powerless to prevent tho entrance of dis ease. when cronp, that formidable enemy of childhood, attacks her darling, her grateful heart almost bursts with jov to think that relief can be obtained by using Coussens* Compound Honey of Tar. No family should he without this great remedy for coughs, colds, and diseases of the throat and lungs, l’ricc 60 cents. For sale by E. B. Benson k Cos. Persons vis iting the Gate City will find a clever, ge nial host in Major Hanvey, of the Cannon House and his table supplied with the best the market affords. On last Friday a negro, calling himself Henry Kay, stole Mr. Parker's mule and then traded it to Mr. Frank Massey for his yellow stallion. The negro was a mulatto, had a scar over one eye, and was dressed in black clothes, with stripes down scams of pants. The negro is gone—so's Massey's horse ; and Parker recovered his mule from Massey. Moral : be careful with whom you “swop hosses.” Editoks Sun : Please notify the people that the Christmas tree at Milltown Acad emy will be at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, instead of at night as heretofore rumored. Rev. B. G'. Thornton and Hon. A. G. McCurry are most respectfully invited to attend and deliver short addresses. The public generally are invited to attend, con tribute and participate. Merchants, do you know that Mcßride & Cos., Atlanta, Ga., sell crockery as low ts it can be bought anywhere ? They keep good goods and don't mind selling them down at hard pan prices. They keep the very largest stock of crockery, glass-ware, etc. Freights are cheaper from Atlanta than any other point—then why not give them your orders? When you once get hitched in with them there is no clicking you off. We invite special Attention to the Ad vertisement of the Orange Judd Cos. Much that Hob said is true, and some that “ain't.” Mr. Short says he was a “ pio nesr-iu this section 29 year* ago.'’ Now, if I am not mistaken in the sound of his trumpet, Mr. Short bought a piece of land from a man who had lived there longer than Mr. Short has. The settlement in whiclt Mr. Short lives Ims been settled over fifty years, and is one of the oldest portions of Hart County. He further says that he and J. £. Herndon, A. C'. Walters and Wil liam Jones came here at about the same time. William Jones moved to this coun ty in 1835, J. S. Herndon in 1852 or 3. Mr. Walters was raised in what is now llart County. He says they “ have done their part in elevating the county to its present standard.” Messrs. Herndon and Jones are clever and unpretending citizens and no doubt feel disgusted at the way their names are used without their consent. Neither do they lay any claims to promi nence. So it is with J. S. Herndon, who lives on a farm where William Bowers settled between 75 and 100 years ago ; and A. 0.
