DEATH IN DAKOTA.

Oculars of the fate of the German fam

They were roov injc from a ahanty into
anew Hoiihc, and were anxious to tf'd
settled in betters quarters before Thurs
day. and before the blizzard £rcw worse
and the mother was confined. Two
little boys were bundled up and placed
in a dry •goods box. The father and
mother were carrying tilings into their
new house when the over-exertion
caused her suddenly to give birth to a
diild in the new, cold house. The fa
ther stopped with her for some time
and then went after another bo} and
girl that were malting their way from
the shanty to the house. Ile succeeded
In bringing them to their mother, lie
then went after the two little boys in
the box, who were wrapped up more
securely than the larger boy and girl
that he had i iloted in first; The storm
evidently blew harder ami the mail go*
numb and bewildered. When found he
whs by the box, and apparently had
attempted to raise it on his back to
carry it and the boys to the house.
One little ltoy was found sitting up*
right and the other with his bead drop
ping forward into his brother’s lap.
The former had bit Ids lips while hit
teeth continued to chatter. 'The Iwn
ami girl were badly frozen in the legs,
arms and fare, but not fatally. 1 lie
father not returning to the lioihc told
the mother his fate, and she started for
a neighbor, half a mile distant. She
walked part of the way and rolled a
part. How she got through is more
than she knows. Neighbors went in
search of the father and boys and
found them as stated, stone dead. The
newly born infant perished. Strange
as it may appear, the mother escaped
with only a few frost marks.
Hoops Once More.
The new style of hoops is likely to
create anew boom in the steel trade.
A New York fashion letter announces
that hoops—the old time hoops—have
appeared on Fifth avenue again. It is
quite a common thing now to see the
heavy swell young lady with a balloon
extension bobbing up and down, and
keeping time with the jaunty steps o!
the wearer. A few years ago there was
a hoop mania. Hoop skirt factories
sprang up all over New Knglaud.
Mail)’ lucky men got suddenly rich
making hoop skirts ; then the “ pull
back ” came, and our young ladies
grew smaller and smaller till by-and
bye the hoop-skirt factories all stopped
and hoops became obsolete. \\ hen an
atrocious fashion comes, and you hear
all the ladies say, “Well, I’ll never
wear such a dreadful scarecrow as that ”
you can make up your mind that they
are all going to have it within three
weeks. Little Miss Vanderbilt appear
ed with a woolen Derby hat one hot
August day in Saratoga, and in less
than tour weeks every \oung lady be
tween New'York and Omaha had one.
Every bat factory in New England went
to making round cornered Derby hats
Now that the same little Miss Vander
bilt lias been seen on Fifth avenue in n
hoop-skirt, you may be sure that every
young lady will he wearing an iron
cage before Christmas. Let the hard
ware nioti lay in a stock of steel.
There will be no iron for the lightning
rod man in a few months.
A Kentucky presukor rope to speak,
find opened tliu Bilile. The first verse
that met his eve happened to be, “The
voice of the turtle shall be heard in the
land.” “Urethren,” said he, “at fir.-t
sight one would not think there was
much in this text, hut, on a little con
sideration, you will see there’s a great
lenl in it. Now, you all know what a
turtle is. 1 fyou've been along by a
pond, you have seen them sitting on a
log punning themselves. Now. it is
said. “The voice of the turtle shall be
beard in the land.” But the turtle
hasn't any voice that anybody ever
board; so it must be the noise be makes
in plunging off the log into the water.
Hence, we must conclude that immer
sion is incuiit, and that immersion will
become universal.”
A story is told of a teacher who was
talking to her scholars regarding the
order of the higher beings. It was a
very profitable subject, aud one in
which they took un uncommon interest.
Flit* told them the angels came first in
jjerfection, and when she asked who
came next aud was readily answered by
the hoy, “man,” she felt encouraged to
ask, “What came next to man f” And
hero a little >havcr, who was evidently
sninrting under defeat in the preceding
question, immediately distanced all
competitors by promptly shouting out
“His undershirt, nm’am."
An Irish piper, who now and then
indulged in a glass too much, was ac
costed by a gentleman with—‘Tut,
what makes your fuee so red ?" ' “Plate
yer honor,” raid Pat, “I always blush
whin I speaks to a gintlemun.

SEWING MACHINE
Is wonderful in its conception and un
oqualed in its capacity for doing a large
range of sowing in textile fabrics and in
leather. Its motions are continuous, ad
mitting of an extraordinary rate of speed,
either by steam or foot power. Every motion
of the treadle makes six stitches, thus pro
ducing about cne-third more work in a day
than other Sewing Machines. It has no
stop motions, and tightens the stitch with
the needle out of the fabric. It uses the
well-known Wilson Compound Feed on both sides of the needle. It
has two-thirds less parts than any other first-class Sewing Machine.
Its arm is fully eight and one-half inches long and five and one-half
inches high, and the whole Machine is very compactly and scientif
ically constructed. In its proportions, elegance of design and general
appearance It Is unsurpassed. Its simple, powerful and perfect
mechanism places it as far in advance of all other Sewing Machines
as the telephone is superior to the tin speaking tube. The WILSON
