The Beautiful snow ! The first snow of
the season sufficient to lay on the ground
visited us on Monday. Monday morning
came in with a cold mist of rain, but to
wards the middle of the day the rain that
had fallen froze hard and the beautiful
snow began to fall thick and fast and con
tinued until night when the earth was car
peted to considerable depth. We had be
gan to fear that we were not going to have
any snow at all. but we are glad our fears
have been dissipated, as it will prove ben

is perched with diguity upon the throne.
About the 12th or 14th of this month,
Mr. Malcotn Stafford will commence the
publication of a paper at Danielsville,
Madison county, to be called The Madison
Yeoman. We hope the citizens of Madi
son will give it a liberal support. Daniels
ville has had no support from the county,
although ono of the best counties m the
State. We have heard merchants who
tried to sell goods in that town say that n
Madison mail would wait ten days for a
j neighbor to go to Athens to get a spool of
thread. Danielsville is ono of the oldest
towns in the State and was finished fifty
years ago and holds its own—one court
house, one jail, three whisky shops, live
dollars worth of dry goods and a black
smith shop. Hartwell would to-day be in
just such a tlx, if it had not been tor two
or three enterprising men. We hope the
Yeoman will be a success and give new
life to the dead town.

tinge evergreens with the slightest tint of
sombre. New Orleans possesses many
and varied attractions. The Atlanta &

We regret very much to learn of the
death of Mr. Deter E. Burton, which oc
curred at bis home in the northern portion
of this count3’. from dropsy of the chest,
on last Wednesday, the 28th of January,
lie was about sixty-live years of age, and
leaves a large family to mourn his death.
Mr. Burton was a successful farmer, a
good neighbor, and one of the best and
most charitable citizens of our county. In
bis death the county at large sustains a
heavy loss.
Died, at her homo in Hartwell, on Mon
day, February 2d, from the effects of an
ulcer in the throat, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Bol
man, wife of Mr. W. 11. Holman, aged 61
years. Mrs. Doltnan had been afflicted for
nearly two 3‘ears and had been deprived of
speech nearly a year when death came like
a friend and relieved her fram pain. We
sympathize deeply with the grief-stricken
relatives. Oh, what loss is comparable to
that of a mother?
We are not agents for any guanos, we
buy all of our guanos, and sell them to
whom we please, and sell to all at the
same price, and will sell one sack to a one

tons. We. wont be undersold by any
agent or company, as we have made
enough on cotton to give away more than
the average agent sells.

Merchants, do you know that Mcßride

as it can be bought anywhere ? They keep
good goods and don’t mind selling them
down at hard pan prices. They keep the
very largest stock of crockery, glass-ware,
etc. Freights are cheaper from Atlanta
than any other point—then why not give
them your orders? When you once get
hitched in with them there is no choking

From a circular just received from the
Commissioner of Land and Immigration of
Georgia, we seo that arrangements have
been made and perfected with the Chil
dren's Aid Society of New York to supply
farmers with hoys over fourteen years of
sge on the following conditions :
“ The applicants are to be endorsed by
the committee. The boys are expected to
work one year for their board and clothes,
after which time the3' are at liberty to
make their arrangements. They are to bo
treated kindly by the applicants. Should
a removal ho necessary, thnt can be ar
ranged by the committer. The Society re
serves the right to remove a boy at any
time for just cause. All expenses of tram
portation arc paid by the Society. Appli
cants will register their names, the fee for
which is one dollar for each applicant."
The local agent"for this county is ('. W.
Seidell, who is authorized to receive appli
cations, and is also authorized to appoint
a committee of five farmers of the county,
which committee will receive the boys,
provide them with homes on the foregoing
condition, and see that the contracts arc
fulfilled ami the boys kindly treated.
From the above it will be seen that all it
costs a fanner to obtain one of these boys
will be one dollar, and wo can see no risk
in making the application, and consider it
a good thing for the boys as well as the
farmer. We suppose the boys arc orphans
and others that are picked up in the large
cities, and are thus given a means of ob
taining employment and homes.
To Hart B ounty Guano Aifeuts.
Gentlemen : I propose to furnish 1,000
pounds of the ** Old B.” Guano to five of
Hart county's best farmers—that is, two
hundred pounds each—and challenge the
agents of other companies to do the same,
the farmers to be selected by the Hart
County Agricultural Society, and to
be men whose son, son-in-law, uncle, un
cle-in-law, aunt, aunt-in-law, or other kin
dred, are not agents for any guano com
pany (a* very few families in the county
have no kinfolks in the sweet-scented
trade), and I also propose for each agent to
deposit fifty dollars with the Agricultural i
Society, and the guano that proves best
takes the pile as a premium.

Died, in Hart county, Georgia, Luther
Edward, only child of W. S. and R. F.
Moorhead, aged 9 months and 24 days.
It is said that death loves a shining
mark, and never was this more strikingly
verified than in this instance. Who will
shine brighter in Heaven than a sweet,
lovely und innocent little child ? Dear pa
rents, sorrow not as those who have no
hope, but draw near to Him who wielded
the rod. Think more of the gain of your
little ope and less of your own loss. Be
fore you dropped the first tear, before you
made its little coffin, before your heart
ached and quivered with pain and grief,
your little one had placed its feet upon
the shining shore and entered the pearly
gales of glory. Lo ! children are the heri

As our town is building up in commer
cial importance, our business men and
merchants would do well to study this
subject. We have been very fortunate in
having but few tires since our town lias
been settled, in 1854, but no one knows
when the calamity may overtake any one,
and in several portions of the town, as on
the square or at the depot, if one house
was to be burned it would endanger all the
rest, and might devastate the whole town.
If a serious lire was to take place, if only
the burning up of one or two business
houses, it would so cripple the commercial
prosperity of our town as to paralyze
trade for a time. We could say much on
this subject, but for the present simply
urge our people to study the matter seri
ously. Inanothercolumnplea.se sec the

To flic I'nrmen of Hurl County.
The time has come when we must look
out for our supplies and guano, and the
most of ns will have to get them on time.
Now. my experience is that it is hest to
commence with the merchant that can run
you clear through the crop. One that will
not stop before your crop is half made to
take mortgages and liens and leave you
without supplies and to get them some
where else.
And another thing I want to say : Let
the man alone who wont give you the mar
ket price for your cotton left after you are
through paying him. And further, let the
man alone who will knock oft' one dollar
per bale for your cotton becauee it does
not weigh as much as he wants it to —the-
man that will tell you that it costs more to
ship a light bale than a heavy one. Now
you all know that that is not true. I say
just let such men alone ; let them keep
their stuff until weevils and rats consume
it, and let them wail and gnash their teeth
to their own destruction and not suck the
life-blood from the poor and oppressed.

from Tbc Detroit free Pr*a.
From the unlimited word* of praise that
have been bestowed upon it, the conclu
sion is fixed that 1 lie Detroit Free Press
is (he most popular journal in existence.
Not that it has the greatest circulation—
though for that matter few papers have a
more extended one—but that the most
profound affection for it exists among those
who read and know its merits.
Certain it is that no journal contains so
many attractive and original features.
Enjoyable in the highest degree, its tone
is the purest, its literary standard the most
excellent.
It combines to a surprising extent in its
well-filled pages the grace, learning, wit.
humor, versatility and genius of the Am
erican people.
Unique among newspapers, sprightly
and nailable in every portion—it is edited
with so much tact, intelligence and care,
that readers of every class find it, above
ali others, the one that satisfies !
Varied are its departments and its con
tents —the whole a most judicious combi
nation. If one may liken intellectual to
material things its field of story, poetry,
correspondence, anecdote, wit. humor, sen
timent. history, belles lettres. knowledge
in its illimitable extent—may be compared
to a well ordered banquet. And around
this superb feast in all its completeness
bounteously laid with contributions from
every clime, sits the blessed spirit of fra
ternity and good fellowship !

Household ” together are furnished at
