Just as w# want to press last week, our
exchange* brought us tho tncloiicholly
tUlings of tlio death of Henry Gregory
Wright, one of the distinguished editors
of our able contemporary the Chronicle
and Constitutionalist, and one of the
worthy Representatives in the present
General Assembly from the county of
Richmond ; and although more than a week
has passed since the sad event oceurred.
and the press has been teeming with tri-
butes to bis memory, we cannor refrain
from presenting a feeble offering to the
memory of a rare and brilliant intellect
whose career is thus prematurely cut ofl
by the cehl hand of death. Our personal
acquaintance with Mr. Wright was of
short duration. A few days before the
convening of the General Assembly in
November of 1878. we reached Atlanta,
and that evening at the Kuuball House we
were introduced to a bland, courteous,
agreeable gentleman in the person of Mr.
Wright, the first member whose acquaint
ance we formed after arriving in Atlanta
Our acquaintance then and there com
menced. and though pleased with his affa
ble manner and pleasant address, it was
during the session which followed, ami the
long summer session of last year, we
came to know Mr. Wright better nnd to
admire him the more. Other# have spoken
of his brilliant talents and patient indus
try, which ranked him at the early age of
twenty-nine in the foremost ranks of jour
nalism. but what he had done for himself
in his chosen position of journalist he was
fast accomplishing in that position of trust
to whose responsible duties the people of
his native county had called him. Asa
legislator Mr. Wright was calm, prudent
and cautious. Though not so noisy ns
others of less abilities, yet never would he
stand by and in silence permit an injudi
cious measure to pass, and when he rose
in his place his points were clearly mqdc
and atrongly presented. As chairman ol
tho committee on railroads Mr. Wright
had onerous duties devolving upon him
which lie discharged faithfully and well.
The proud reputation tho Chronicle* Con
stitutionalist enjoys of being one of the
best edited journals in the South is a suf
ficient proof of the ability which Mr.
Wright brought to bear asap editor. But
he is gone. His labors are ended. “ This
is the state of man : to-day he puts forth
the tender leaves of hope; to-morrow
blossoms and bears bis blushing honors
thick upon him—the third day comes a
mm. i no ueuucimi sfrannatf, on whose
banks he resided, will continue to sweep
on with ceaseless murmur to the mighty
ocean—lovely spring will again return with
its halcyon days and its perfume laden
flowers, but Henry G. Wright, young and
- gifted as he was. will sleep his last sleep
in the city of his lathers, and Georgia
joiirnali'in and the councils of the State
will know hnn no more forever.
BACOX AMD ItKIASW II U RAILROAD.
It will be remembered by our readers
that tbe last General Assembly authorized
a lease of tbe Macon A Brunswick Rail
road on certain conditions, among which
was the fixing of a minimum amount of
rental per year, and the extension of the
road to Atlanta. At the late ottering of
the road under said act, a Mr. Cooper was
the highest bidder, and Mr. 11. 1. Kimball,
representing a New Volk company, was
the next highest. One of the terms of the
lease was that, if the highest bidder failed
to comply with the provisions of the law
within thirty days, the lease should be
given to the next highest bidder. The
highest bidder failed to comply within
thirty days, and the Governor notified .Mr.
Kimball, who was in New York, that he
was entitled to the road, being the second
highest bidder, and the first having failed
to comply. Mr. Kimball replies that he
will take charge of the road at once. In
the meantime the Governor goes on to
New York ami makes an arrangement with
anew company to take Charge of the road.
This gives ground to the charge that the
Governor has done what he had no author
ity under the law to do, and the further
charge that the Governor has made a sort
of “job ”of the business. W ht'lhcr the
Governor can be legally sustained or not.
and whether the Governor has made a lit
tle personal " speck ” in the matter or not.
Mr. Kimball it seems proposes, like the
ghost of Banquo, to not down at the Gov
ernor's billing. To this end he has re
tained able counsel, and has served a no
tice on the Governor that he claims the
road under the aforesaid facts. It there
fore seems altogether likely that a huge
lawsuit is snugly wrapped up in the lease
of the Macon & Brunswick railroad. It
is claimed that the Governor's character
can stand invincible against ail such
charges or intimations as the above. \Ve
must confess that the Governor's charac
ter has been subjected to some very se
vere shocks and not been shattered to
pieces that we are aware of. but as to the
effect such suspicions have had on that
character in the estimation of the people,
deponent sailh not.
Since the above was put in type, the in
formation reaches us that the sale of the
Macon & Brunswick has been perfected
with the company represented by Mr.
Couper, who was the highest bidder.

The old woman is a powerful Methodist,
and reading the accounts lust week of the
wonderful meetings Rev. J. S. Inskip had
been holding in Augusta and other towns,
and at present was storming the fort tn
Charleston with good effect, expressed the
desire to attend the meeting. \Ye start
ed on evening from Hartwell,
and arrived in Charleston on Saturday at
11 p. in., tired and sleepy. Stopped at the
Waverly House in the bend of King street,
and had a nice, large room looking out on
King street, the great fashionable through
fare of the city, where one could sit and
look at the gay and giddy throng of ridhly
dressed males and females us they prome
naded up and down the street. \V e at
tended Trinity Church at 10:3b a. m., on
Sunday. 'The house was crowded. Had
a line sermon from Mr. Inskip, and the
singing was never beaten this side ol
Heaven. The pastor of the Church read
out the names of sixty persons who had
applied fur membership. lie stated that
he would visit each one of them at their
homes and supply them with a copy of the
Methodist Discipline which he wanted
them to read carefully before they joined
the Church. That is just the thing all de
nominations should do—let the applicants
know what they are going into. Anyone
who follows out the rules of the Method
ist Discipline will make honest, good citi
zens. and be certain to be in the right
place when the roll is called for the elected
to enter the joys of that bright and beauti
ful land. \Y e never enjoyed anything so
well, and went up to the altar for prayer,
as we felt like we wanted to have the bene
fit of the prayers of such a host of good,
Christian men and women.
Rev. J. S. Inskip is, we think, far supe
rior to any revival preacher we have ever
heard, and we have heard tile bestofall
the denominations in the l nited States.
\Ye don't think him and his wife are lit
for any other place than heaven. Mr. In
skip is vi ry eccentric in his ways, and re
minds us of our old beloved preacher.
John IV. Knight, though Mr. Inskip is
far superior in intellect and education, lie
lias a vein of wit and humor running
through him that will make people laugh
one moment and they will be in tears the
next. \Ye would like to be in Heaven and
see the two old preachars meet. We are
satisfied they would do something funny
enough to make the angels smile. Reli
gion is not the sorrowful, doleful, long
laced business you heard it was.

City Engineer. A. 11. Davidson, adver
tises this morning for proposals for build
ing a lisliwav in tbe dam at the Locks
across -tbe Savannah River. Prof. M<-
Donald, United States Fish Commissioner,
is the inventor of theraav. and will be in
the city to-dnv. lie is going through the
South looking after river shad, and repre
sents that this device works easily and
well. It is substantially a trough extend
ing from tbe dam into 1 lie bed of the river
below, and is made up of a series iff buck
ets. sS'ihat, each little (all of water as it is
caught in the buckets, is tint six inches
fall. The. water issues from the top buck
ets nto side buckets, from which it
is forced op and out into the bucket, six
inches below, so that at each fall an eddy
is produced which assist tbe lish in their
ascent. A design of tbe fishway has been
prepared by Mr. Davidson, who favors the
plan. This will be a matter of interest,
and. we hope, satisfactory to our friends
in the upper .river counties. \\ e trust that
the shad will recognize the claims of our
friends and avail themselves of through
rates and new routes to the mountain
shoals of the river.
