In accordance with * previous call made
by the Chairman of the State Democratic
Executive Committee, n meeting was held
in Atlanta on the .T>th ultimo, to inaugu
rate proceedings towards organising the
party for the appr- aching campaign*, Slate
and National. Hie meeting was well at
tended by the members of the Executive
Committee, the proceedings very harmoni
ous and the work before the body well and
wisely done. A resolution was adopted
to the effect that two conventions be held,
one for the purpose of selecting delegates
to the Presidential nominating convention,
at Cincinnati, and the other to appoint
electors and nominate State House officers.
The tirst convention is to be held in
Atlanta, Oth of June; and the other at |
the same place. August the 4th. A reso
lution was aKo adopted requesting the peo
ple in choosing the delegates to said con
ventions to adopt such methods us will in
sure “ a full, free and fair expression ” of
the populai will in the selection of dele
gates and candidates. The committee re
commended that the people meet to select
delegates to the tirst named convention on
the first Tuesday in June, and that the
meeting to name delegates to the last con
vention convene on Wednesday, the 21st
of July.
On the question of the two-thirds rule,
mentioned by the lust Presidential Conven
tion. the c HumiWce suggests that the peo
ple at the primary meeting held to choose
delegates to the first convention indicate
their wishes on the subject
At the close of the deliberations the fol
low! ig resolution was adopted :
L’tsolccd, That the Committee having in
jts deliberations and actions ignored all
personal intercuts and all provious estrange
ment and divisions among the Democrats,
earnestly calls upon the whole parly
throughout the State to do likewise, over
looking or casting behind them the biiter
nessoftlieir late contests with one another
and uniting once more against the common
antagonist of their principles and policy,
and lhat for the promotion of this end, all
Democrats in principle who intend to abide
by the action of such conventions arc urg
ed to pat i. cite on an equal footing in the
primary meetings for the selection ol dele
gates thereto.
From the above statement of the pro
ceedings, it will he observed that tbe pol
icy inaugurated is a broad and liberal one.
The Committee seeks the formation of no
“ rings and cliques,” which are the slogan
of the disaffected, who, when they feel
Ihat their peculiar fitness for office is pass
ed by and ignored, attempt to arouse
11tical ostracism, but calls upon all 11
bury all past estrangement and grievances
and unite in one more grand rally for the
maintenance of those great principles which
are dear to all. Let the liberal policy he
welcomed and carried out. Let the hydra
lieadcd serpent of disaffection, divisions
and strifes of the past be buried out of
sight. and let all lovers of honest, fair and
constitutional government, turning their
backs on the past, unite in the old battle
cry of the party— ** Once more to the
breach, dear friends, once more,'’ and
march onward to the achievment of those
brilliant triumphs, which so brightly em
blazon the past record of our grand old
State.

Our distinguished representative in Con
gress has written a lengthy letter to the
Augusta Evening News, explanatory of
the charges recently made against him in
connection with the appointment of Cen
sus Supervisor in this Oistrict. Mr. Ste
phens brands as •* utterly untrue ’’ all the
charges made against him, that he was the
cause of the failure of Or. Casey to receive
the appointment instead of.Mr. McWhorter,
and it would seem from Mr. Stephens' let
ter that Senator Cordon is in some ineas-
ure responsible for the cause aforemen
tioned. It will be remembered that quite
a variance arose between Senator (Jordon
end Mr. Stephens on the question of the
Simmon’s supcrvisorship. We took sides
in that matter with Senator Gordon, and
were very much gratified when we observ
ed the brilliant victory that attended his
efforts, by the Senate so overwhelmingly
rejecting Simmons. But we think that nei
ther Mr. Stephens nor Senator Gordon are
responsible for this matter. Wc are very
glad, however, to notice Mr. Stephens de
nial. If he had not done so the reports
that iiad flown over the country to that
effect would have been taken as true. It
is very clear from Mr. Stephens' statement
that his first and last choice was l>r. Ca
sey. It is also clear that he had acquaint
ed General Walker with this fact. This
being true, the charges that Mr. Stephens
was the cause of the failure cannot be
claimed. And while this is true, it is also
a fact that Senator Gordon is in no w ise
responsible for the failure, lie was for
]>r. Casey, and Senator Gordon's whole
character as a soldier patriot and a states
man. shows him as ever ready and willing
to maintain the of his friends as well
as the principles lie holds dear and sacred.
Our distinguished Senator and Repre
sentative have had a little sparring about
the Simmons matter, and that being ended,
we see no reason why anew bone of con
tention should be thrust between them to
widen the breach. They are both Geor
gia's gifted and beloved son-. She would I
lie glad to see them hand In hand and heart |
to heart battling together In her behalf.
The high-toned chivalry, noble bearing and
faithful allegiance to Ilia behests of duty
of the one, is as dear as the masterly states
manship and purity of character which
illustrates the life of the other. Then for
the sake of our noble Commonwealth
whose name they both cherish, and at
whose shrine they both bow with filial
reverence and love, we trust these her em
inent sons may no farther be alienated for
causes w e deem wholly unnecessary.
Wk notice that ex-Justicc DlecUcy has
built him a cottage x>n “the mountain
tops,*’ overlooking the town of Clayton, in
Rabun county, and ia lending a secluded
life. We also leant that he is engaged in
literary pursuit •• and if such be the rase, '
we doubt not but the public will be favor-:
cd with something worthy of his pen and |
broad intellect. This is a little character
istic of ambition's course. Judge Week
ley was born in the remote county of Ra
bun. and amidst the mountain crags of bis
native county liis boyhood days were pass
ed. Leaving Rabun, he went to Atlanta
and built up a professional reputation which
grew with the rapid grow th of the city.
Having risen to an exalted position in his
profession lie was tendered a seat on the
Supreme Bench, which position lie ndorn
ed for about five years. Resigning this of
fice and turning his back upon the busy
life which characterizes our Southern me
tropolis, ‘his heart untraveled,’ turns to the
dear old county of Rabun ; on the lofty
summit of its hills lie rears his home, and
again inhales the same breezes that fanned
his boyhood cheeks and views again, day
after day, the scenes which charmed Ins
| boyhood eyes. Such is life, and such is
| the end of all ambition and hopes. How
ever ardent it tuny be, and wherever the
siren sorceress may lead, we doubt not but
the happiest and dearest spot for wearied
frame and careworn mind to repose and
rest is amidst tiie quiet scenes of early
! boyhood home.
Thk Sparta Tshmnclitc thinks *“ The ex
igencies of the times demand the re-or
ganization of the Democratic party in
(■eorgia. on a distinctly avowed platform
of party principles,” and is bitterly op
posed to hero worship. Our way of think
ing precisely. A party with correct prin
ciples. and men imbued with the princi
ples of the party, and who think more of
their country's welfare, and less of them
selves, are what we need at this juncture,
fhe politicians of the present day nrc too
much engaged in individual warfare to
to serve their country properly.

Maj. John M. Freeman did not serve

the Constitutional Convention. Now, as,
