former, ho is developing • great deal more
strength than was anticipated e short time
agn. We think it very evident that Mr.
Tilden'* will g® beforo the Conven
tion fer x re-nomination, and that it will
ha*e a strong support. The division which
prevails in Now York is reported to be
subsiding. Very true the New York De
mocracy is wofhlly divided as to who
should be nominated, as was recently
shown at the Syracuse Convention when
the kelly wing held an anti-Tildcn meet
ing mid passed resolntions denunciatory
of him. but recent advices indicate that
better reason is beginning to prevail
among th® Tainmanyites as to their alti
maio course, and while they are unaltera
bly opposed to the nomination of Mr. T il
den. they will not blast the prospects of
the party in the approaching struggle by
refusing to abide the result ot this Cincin
nati Convention. Even in the face of this
seemingly hopeless and irrevocable aliena
tion of the two wings, Mr. Tilden appears
to have been making very tine headway, a
practical victory having been scored for
him in Pennsylvania. Now with the evi
dences that The broad hiatus in New York
can be bridged, we may readily expect Ins
boom to increase. U e have all the while
believed, whatever nuty be the individual
preferences of thousands in this country,
that with New York n certainty for Mr.
Tilden. he is the most available candidate
that could be put forth at Cincinnati, but
hits availability depends altogether on the
attitude New York his own State will oc
cupy.
Next in importance to Mr. Tilden at this
r ime appears Judge Field, fI is name first
became prominently connected with this
high office a short while ago when he
showed himself
the Supreme Bench of the United States,
such a linn, pure and able exponent of
constitutional law. He was n strong
Union man during the late war. which fact
r.vill strongly commend him to the North
ern masses, and being a faithful and incor
uuiptible jurist the Smith would gladly fol
low under his leadership. Although train
ed in a different political school to that of
Mr. Lincoln, yet on account of his emi
nent attainments and spotless integrity he
xvas appointed by him in 18BJ to the dis
aillgoiMied position be now occupies and
which he has graced with such ability
-since that time. In him a candidate would
‘be'prcsented to the people as a flt expo
nent of law and order, ami in marked con
trast with that military prowess and mis
rule which we trust is ended forever in
/this country.

'Our honored Representative Mr. Ste
phens in a late letter Rives further assur
ance that he was not responsible for Judge
McWhorter receiving the appointment of
Census Supervisor in this District instead
of Dr. Casey. We in advance stated our
view to be that neither Mr. Stephens nor
Senator Gordon are blameworthy, and
nothing that has transpired since lias in
duced us to change that view. Mr. Ste
phens, it is true, signed botii candidates’
papers, and if they were competent men
•-,ve think that he had a perfectly legitimate
right, both as a citizen and a Representa
tive, to do this. We regard botii Mr. Ste
phens and Senator Gordon as firm, faith
ful and unflinching patriots. They arc
! hoth public men, that wield a large influ
ence both at home and in Washington, and
•of whom Georgia has just cause to be
proud. They are both, too. representa
tives that bear the most unfaltering alle
giance to their dear old Commonwealth
and whenever the little brush about unim
portant matters is past ami forgotten, we
desire to see them nnd expect to see them
working together in the public service with
• common effort to promote the great in
terests of the country. Their statesman
ship is tv a certain extent cut loose from
its proper moorings in a controversy about
minor things, ami is better fitted to *• soar
with no middle flight” in tho achievment
of graver and more important public
benefits.
HACK AUAIX.
Perhaps everybody is not aware that
we, in company with Will Webb, Hob
.Stephenson and Joe Scott, exeurted to
Charleston a few days ago. Anyway, we
are glad that their not knowing it did not
change it, for we went, and no mistake.
We struck up with many friends on the
route, and found a host of them in Char
leston. We would just remark that we
found the old city in the same place we
left it years ago. Some of the old houses
ought to have been set fire long ago.
The)’ are dilapidated, and give the city an
old. old appearance. In fact, we think it
would have been a benefit to the city if
Sherman had have gotten a lick at these.
There arc many beautiful residences and
some of the prettiest flower yards we ever
saw. birt for every one of these you will
find fifty shabby old shanties, that are tit
for nothing hut to breed disease or be
bum ed.
There is not a cleverer people in the
world than that of Charleston. They are
noted for their refinement and hospitality.
The business men aro liberal, and have
none of that picayunishnws, to be found
in some of the large cities, about them.
The cotton and guano men have thrived
well her* eiuoe the war. Speukmg of gu
ano men. reminds us of our trip up the
Ashley River where inoat of the factories
around (TharleOlon are situated. Promi
nent among them ia the Atlantic. The
tiahing and oyster gathering both interest
ed us; also the dredging for phosphate.
The shipping never fails to attrset the at-
tention of the countryman, and we, of
course, were no exception to the rule. We
enjoyed the steamboat rides, the views
from the battery. *c. We witnessed
Captain Paul Boyton'a famous aquatic
exhibition, or. as tb News and Courier
termed it. ** circus,”’
It would have done our friends at home
good to have seen how many fish our party
managed to get on the outside of. Like
life, our trip was attended with some
pleasures and a few' perplexities. Of the
latter J. H. S. bore his part. In one short
day he had the misfortune to have four hat
swaps without his consent, he being at his
meals. We attended church Sunday, and
>ook in St. Mary’N theatre, (Catholic
Church) or such it appeared to us. The
music was splendid—three violins, a base
violin, an organ and twelve singers.
Charleston has capital, but not the en
terprise she ought to have. If Atlanta
had half the capital sho would show you s
city worth looking at. (Jive Atlanta the
capital and the ocean, and she would rival
New York.
In Columbia we visited the penitentiary
and lunatic asylum, (lave no desire to
take up residence at either plaee.
All along the line of the railroad from
Charleston to Anderson farmers were very
busy. We saw a few fields of good oats
between Columbia and Anderson. The
wheat generally looks badly, as it does
here.
We'are at home again and hard at work,
and it's the best place yet.

i •* One of the most remsrkahle freaks of
nature ever brought to light was brought
, to lUft. attention of a Philadelphia physi

case ef real melanosis or pigmentation,
where file pigment er melanin, which giv js

whole body. A boy born of white parents
anil perfectly natural in color at his birth,

American birth, and reside at 1.907 I-cmon

This " pigmentation ” ia anew name for
it. Years Hgo at a dinner in Washington
City, where an Indian Chief from the
plains was present, a very dark-skinned
M. C. was being joked about his complex
ion, when "he stated that his mother was
frightened by being followed by a black
negro. The Indian replied: Yes, and
