Gracious Hospitality.
Miss Alice Longfellow celebrates
the 17th of June each year in away
■which reminds one of her father’s
hospitality to strangers during his
lifetime. She provides a special car
for a party of working girls from
Boston, different ones being invited
each season, and entertains them for
the afternoon at the old historic
mansion in Cambridge. The art
treasures of the home; the objects
of literary interest associated with
her father’s life and work; the fa
mous chair made from the “spread
ing chestnut tree” and given by the
school-children at Cambridge; the
beautiful pen, a gift from Helen
Hunt, made from the pillar to which
Bonivard was chained in the castle
at Chilion —all these and many oth
ers are freely exhibited. Tea is
served either on the lawn or in the
fine old wainscoted parlor, with its
cushioned window seats and crimson
draperies, and a drive to Mount Au
burn, where Longfellow is buried,
crowns the day’s pleasure.—Har
per's Bazar.

Snails Are Numerous.
There are over two thousand spe
cies of snails, and they are found in
all parts of the world. Some are
even smaller than a pinhead, while
others, in France and Italy, for in
stance, are cultivated for food, and
are large enough to make a good
mouthful. Snails are vegetarians,
and have jaws and tongues of saw
like edge, the number of points on
each running into the thousands.
On the approach of cold weather the
snail throws a film over the mouth
of its shell, which tightens like a
drumhead. As it becomes colder,
other films are added on the plan of
storm-windows.

Is What We Are Look
ing to for Help.
Congress will grind away, and
while we hope for some relief from
it the splendid promise of abuudait
crops gives us greater assurance of
better times than anything else.
As usual I shall offer extra, and I
might say this time EXTRAOR
DINARY inducements to my cus
tomers who will sell me cotton dur
ing the month of September.
This I mention incidentally, as
sur ng them that I intend to do my
part whether Congress improves the
condition of affairs or not.
I have scraped the country from
North to South for bargains and
have used greater care, if possible,
th ii usual in making my selections,
so that I shall be able to show the
very nicest stock, complete in every
line.
I have all the advantages possess
ed by anyone hereabouts and am as
willing that my customers shall share
them with me as any man or set of
men. This I am sure the people
understand from the very flattering
trade I have had this year.
In order to make room for my fall
