The Southern Railway has
transferred its freight depart
ment from Washington, D. C.,
to Atlanta, Ga.
The money has been raised
and Atlanta will soon have an
other elephant on her hands,
A race riot occurred at Haugh
ville, Indiana, between 200 ne
groes and white employees of
the National Malleable Castings
Co., and many shots were fired.
The whites overpowered the ne
groes and a number were wound
ed on both sides. All of which
goes to show that race preju
dice is not confined to the South.
A terrible accident happened
in Richmond, Va., on the 24th
of the month. J. D. Wilson
shot and instantly killed his
friend G. E. Apperson, mistak
ing him for a burglar. The
families of both men lived in
the same house. Apperson’s
family was away and he had
changed his sleeping room.—
Wilson, hearing a noise, investi
gated the matter, and seeing a
form in the dark he supposed to
be a burglar, he challenged, and
receiving no answer, fired with
fatal result.
Bobby Walthour, the Georgia
wonder and champion bicycle
rider, defeated Harry Elkes, his
rival, and smashed records right
along at the Revere track on
the 23d of August. The race
was a 25-mile motor-paced race.
The time of the ride was 35
minutes, 11 1-5 seconds. Wal
thour won by half a lap, and
taking 9 seconds off the world’s

Joshua Brockett, a negro
sculptor of Atlanta, Ga., has
recently finished a statue of
General Robert E. Lee that is
pronounced by critics to be a
remarkably fine piece of work
and an excellent likeness of the
great Confederate chieftain.—
Brockett has done quite a lot of
meritorious work and is said to
be a sculptor of unusual ability.
He has the distinction of being
the first negro that has made a
reputation as a sculptor.
The State of Georgia will
bring suit against the Plant Sys
tem and the Southern Railway
for $5,000 damages for violating
Rule No. 36 of the Railroad
Commission of Georgia. The
lines had been ordered by the
Commission not to discriminate
against the Brunswick & Birm
ingham in the city of Bruns
wick, but the two roads stead
fastly refused to obey the order
of the Commission, and now
they will have to suffer as a re
sult of violating the order.
Textile mills are well occu
pied, business gradually increas
ing in the cotton goods division,
and demands for quick delivery
emphasize the fact that stocks
are low and requirements for
consumption are pressing. Ex
port trade in brown cottons is
insignificant, but more inqui
ries are reported, says Dun’s Re
view.
It is a reproach to our relig

and democracy that with all the
means the-State possesses there
should be such an alarming
number of people who cannot
read the ballots they deposit in
the box, nor read the Bible.—

A pathetic scene was witness
ed in a bank at Noblesville, Ind.,
the other day. For forty-four
years Enos Randall, a hard
working farmer, had been in
debt, and misfortune seems to
have been his constant compan
ion. A few days ago when he
had sold his crops he had money
enough to take up every dollar
that stood against him. When
he had the cancelled notes in
his hands at the bank he knelt
on the floor and thanked God
fervently for his deliverance.

Prof. W. O. McKinney has
just closed quite an interesting
singing school of ten days at
this place, with 75 pupils. The
exercises were very instructive
and every one, old and young,
manifested great interest. Many
visitors attended. Prof. Me-
Kinnev certainly understands
vocal music and knows how to
impart the knowledge to others,
as their wonderful improvement
in so short a time was unmis
takably evidenced on the last
day. He has the thanks of his
patrons for so willingly singing
their favorite songs and many
others requested. Should he so
desire he can easily get up an
other class here next summer,
as every one was delighted with
his mode of teaching. And the
school, to show their apprecia
tion of Prof. McKinney’s hard
work to advance them, made up
a purse of five dollars more
than he charged and presented
it to him.
Special mention should be
made of George Holland and
others who assisted at the organ
and in leading the music.

The people of Tifton, Ga.,

“blind tigers,” and organizing
themselves into a posse have
visited every man in town sus

there was strong proof of his
guilt, and notified him that he
must close up his business and
leave the community in three
days. Quite a large amount of
whiskey and beer has been
seized and poured out on the
ground. The failure of the
courts to break up the illicit sale
of intoxicants, is the reason as
signed for the people taking
this step.
