Parent - Teacher Association Is A Vital
Factor In Growth of Hartwell Schools
The Hartwell Parent-Teacher As
sociation, since its organization three
years ago, has been the one “power
behind the throne” for better schools
and enlarged activities in school cir
cles locally.
Indeed, the school system of Hart
well would not stand at the top to
day had it not been for the work—
hard work—-of the P. T. A. members.
The officers elected for 1924-25
are as follows:
President—Mrs. H. W. Bingham.
Ist Vice President —Mrs. J. H.
Barton.
2nd Vice President—Mrs. J. L.
Teasley.
Recording Secretary—Mrs. P. P.
Harrison.
Treasurer —Mrs. Carey Kidd.
Corresponding Secretary Miss
Ida McGukin.

THE P. T. A. IN 1924-25
By MRS. H. W. BINGHAM,
President Hartwell P. T. A.
What part shall the P. T. A. play
in the success of our school for the
coming year?
What constitutes a P. T. A.? A
P. T. A. is supposed to be an or
ganization of parents and teachers.
If you will look in the dictionary,
you will find that “parents” does not
mean mothers. It means fathers and
mothers. Neither does P. T. A.
stand for about ten or fifteen moth
ers working themselves to death try
ing to buy equipment for the school.
P. T. A. stands for all the fathers,
all the mothers and all the teachers
working together for the advance
ment of the home school and com
munity. The home by itself cannot
educate the child, the school by it
self cannot educate the child, the
community by itself cannot educate
the child, but they must all work to
gether.
The P. T. A, is an organization
which is supposed to exist for the
purpose of improving conditions in
the home, school and community, so
that each of them shall exert the
right educational influence over the
child.
Our State P. T. A. urges that we
begin now to get our children phy
sically fit for the beginning of the
school. Children of high school age
should get at least eight hours
sleep each night; children of gram
mar school age at least ten. In the
next three weeks, see that your chil
dren retire at the proper time and
rise at the proper time, so they will
have this habit formed. Regulate
their diets, so they will enter school
with their stomachs and digestive
organs in good condition. Have
those bad tonsils or adenoids re
moved, and their teeth examined.
Let’s start them off in a good phy
sical condition.
Then, all the mothers, fathers
and teachers who can possibly do
so, meet at the school house Thurs
day, September Ist, for the first
meeting of the P. T. A. Plans for
the* year’s work will be discussed
and a good program carried out. We
have an entertainment committee
who are going to see that we have
an especially attractive place of
meeting. Come and enjoy it and
help plan the conditions that will
determine your child’s progress in
school another year. We need bet
ter equipment of various kinds in
our school, we need to regulate out
home life to better fit the child’s
school life, and most especially we
need to improve our community life.
We’ll never get anywhere criticizing
the “joy-riding” and forms of amuse
ment in which our young people in
dulge if we do nothing to supplant
these with the right kind of social
life. What organization could better
regulate the social life of the com
munity’ than an organization of the
parents and teachers?
If you can come to the P. T. A.
just one time during the year, let
that time be the first meeting. Re
member the date of the meeting is
changed from the last Thursday to
the first Thursday in the month.
