Visit To Catalina Island Off The Pacific
The following excepts from a let
ter to Mr. and Mrs. McAlpin Thorn
ton, of Hartwell, from their daugh
ter, Miss Josephine Thornton, who is
visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and
Mrs. C. L. Hobron, in Arcadia, Calif.,
will be of interest to ouFreaders:
Arcadia, Calif., Aug. 6, 1924.
Dearest Family:—We got back
from Catalina Island last night about
7 :30 o’clock. Sure was a grand trip.
Mrs. Papas and Evelyn Murphy (her
cousin from Chicago, just my age
and about the same size) went with
us.
We drove the car over to Pasa
dena, left it and bought ticket from
there, and went on electric car to
Wilmington, where we got on the
huge boat. It was great fun—not
at all rough, so none of us thought
of being sea-sick. Some people were
though. Evelyn and I tried hard to
keep from laughing at them, ’cause
we feared the consequences!
The boat was crowded on both
decks. We danced part of the way
over, but stayed on upper deck a lot
of the time to see the whale that
came “spouting” by. It was very
beautiful, the water was blue and it
was sure fun dancing, though up and
down hill most of the time.
Wc got there about 12, left Wil
mington about 9. Time just flew.
Had lunch at a cefetcria and got
rooms at the Catalina Hotel. Saw
dozens of girls with the Ponjoli hair
cut—like a man’s, you know, and ev
erybody’ was so brown they looked
like “Mexies.” I got quite a coat
myself. Went on the glass bottom
boat to see the submarine gardens.
Just can’t describe how beautiful
they really are. Saw plenty and smell
ed sufficient fish for a while. Saw
them haul in two abecoves weighing
about 50 to 60 pounds each and a
hugs sword fish weighing 158 pounds.
Took our pictures with them (all of
us fish.)
The orchestra on the boat was fine,
and Mr. Wrigley (chewing gum king
who owns most of the island) was
on so we had special music as we
left Wilmington and as W’e arrived in
Catalina, by a band on board.
Speed boats, hydroplanes and row
boats greeted us as we arrived. It
was sure wonderful and I hated to
leave.
The bathing there in Avalon Bay
is wonderful—not rough at all and
warm. Uncle Lath says we’re going
back and stay a week before the
summer is over. Hope we do—l
just love it, and everybody is so
friendly.
We went to the curio shops and
looked at things. They were aw
fully interesting* then to the hotel
office of the Clerk of the Superior
Court of said county, and that a copy
of said petition and said order be
published in The Hartwell Sun once
a week for four week®.

and to dinner at a case and to hear
the Marine band play in the amphi
threathre until 9 o’clock then the
dance began and we danced until 11
p. m. Met good many cute “fel
lows,” (as they call them here). Be
ing two of us, Evelyn and I had a
big time.
We went on a searchlight boat ride
to see the flying fish from 7 to 8.
Sure were beautiful and almost flew
into the boat. They looked like
diamonds they were so shiny and
white.
Next morning we went on an auto
ride (bus, rather). They allow very
few autos on the island—none at
night, so everybody can walk on the
streets there.
Saw Wrigley’s home, and the
home of Tom Mix, Zane Grey and
of Gene Stratton Porter; she was
there but didn’t see her. All were
just nice summer homes except Mr.
Wrigley’s which was a $100,009
home, with thirty-seven rooms, in
cluding servants’ quarters. All were
built right on the side of the moun
tain, especially Mr. Wrigley’s-—l3O
steps up to his door. Had lunch at
the St. Catherine. Evelyn and I
tbok a 6 1-2 mile trip in the speed
boat on the river. It was the best
fun of all.
Left yesterday at 4:15. A big
motor boat followed us out, playing
“Farewell To Thee” and “ ’Til We
Meet Again.’”
Evelyn and Mrs. Papas went on
the boat to San Diego and Tia Juano,
Mexico, and we are back in Arcadia,
looking forward to the Spanish fiesta
which is in Santa Barbara the 13th
through the 18th. Everybody will
dress in Spanish costume. Sure hope
to meet Evelyn there for she goes
back to Chicago right afterwards.
So much for the trip, but of course
this isn’t half.
Lovingly,
JOSEPHINE.
