Brown Brothers
Established a little more than two
years ago the business has noted a
steady increase in its business from
the beginning and is now one of the
busiest concerns of its kind to be
found in Hart county. It was opened
up on the faith that such an esta
blishment would meet with a hearty
welcome on the part of the buying
public of Hartwell and the country
round about, and this faith has been
fully justified by the large volume
of trade that has been attracted to
this progressive concern.
The building occupied is 30x75
feet and is well stocked with such
brands as Headlight Flour and Alfo
corn Brands of Feeds.
Mr. N. P. Brown, the active mana

J. D. Matheson &
Sons
Established about 32 years ago the
business of J. D. Matheson, leading
merchant of Hartwell, has been in
continuous operation during a third
of a century. During all this neriod.
many persons in Hartwell and Hart
county have learned that there is no
better place than Matheson’s to buy
their year's supply of clothing, shoes,
hats and groceries. Many people of
the county have made it a rule to
buy all their goods in these lines
from Matheson's and they have been
among the most valuable customers
of the establishment.
The well known brand of Red
Goose shoes for boys, girls and wo
men is handled by this firm, also the
Armister brand for men.
The store is under the manage
ment of R. E. and C. E. Matheson.
Mr. R. E. Matheson is a director
in the Hartwell Bank, Hartwell Cot
ton Mill and the Hartwell Railroad
and is also a member of the Board
of Aidermen.

entire section of the county for that
matter, is the plant of the Hartwell

Hartwell Grocery
Company
Established more than twenty
years ago the wholesale grocery
business of the Hartwell Grocery Co.
has been successfully conducted
during that period, and has built up
a patronage throughout Hart and
adjoining counties that has shown a
steady increase up to the present
time.
The building occupied by this busy
establishment is 40x100 feet in
dimensions, two stories high, with
basement of the same size for the
storage of certain classes of goods.
Carload lots are the rule in the buy
ing done by this house, and plenty
of room is needed for the accommod
ation of the large stock of goods un
loaded into their stores. It has been
found by experience that the carry
ing of a large stock is well worth
while, not only because it enables the
concern to supply all needs of its
customers promptly, but because it
accustoms the patron to rely upon
the Hartwell Grocery Co., at all times
and thus retains this patronage.
H. S. Phillips, the Pfresident, is a
Shriner and known by all. I. J.
Phillips the Vice Pres., is a Mason
and a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Mr. B. S. Hall, Sec. & Treas., is a
Shriner and also a member of the
Kiwanis Club. All of the above
named Members of the firm are well
liked by all throughout this entire
section and elsewhere, and are the
type of business men that are a real
asset to any community.

Southern Case
One of the most sanitary cases to
be found in this section is that of the
Southern Case. The proprietor, Mr.
N. P. Kolgaklis, has alway made it a
policy to serve the best of food, quick
service and above all sanitary condi
tions.
Mr. Kolgaklis was in the late war
being stationed at Camp Wadsworth,
S. C., he is a Mason and an Odd
Fellow and is very popular through
out the town and codnty.
The origin of the Rhode Island Red
chicken was similar to that of the Buff
Orpington in England. It was a lo
cal race of poultry found extensively
in Rhode Island, produced by the farm
ers themselves without any definite <
breeding and from uncertain stock. It
is thought by some authorities that
a considerable foundation of this lo
cal Rhode Island poultry was an old
smooth-legged Cochin-China stock; bnt
that ordinary Cochins were also large
ly bred is undoubted, and there is
strong evidence that the Asiatic stock
was considerably crossed and inter
mingled with Brown Leghorns.
