THE HARTWELL SUN, HARTWELL, GA., MAY 1,1925
Governor Urges An
Observance of May
Day In Georgia
Urging the people of Georgia to
special observance of “May Day” on
May 1 in recognition of the rising
generation, Governor Clifford Walker
has issued a formal proclamation
pointing out that public attention
should be focused on plans pertain
ing to the health and well-being of
the children.
The proclamation follows:
“Whereas, the children of Geor
gia are the embryo citizens of a
few years hence upon whose shoul
ders the affairs of state shall rest,
and,
“Whereas, great movements are
already und,er way for their protec
tion and conservation, embodying
the desires of our people for their
physical, mental and spiritual wel
fare, and,
“Whereas, May day has long been
connected with purification from dis
ease and a cleansing of the mind
as well as the body in that season
when earth itself is putting on new
raiment,
“Now, therefore,-I, Clifford Walk
er, governor of Georgia, do hereby
designate May first as May day in
Georgia and do call upon the people
to focus their attention upon those
plans which pertain to the health
and well-being of her children.
“And further, I respectively sug
gest that throughout the first week
in May those citizens possessing
automobiles contribute to the cause
by filling their cars with children
less fortunate for jaunts in the
country that the spirit of play for
both grown-ups and children be en
couraged by games and various
forms of May day festivities, bring
ing youth and age together in a
greater sympathy and encouraging
the importance of wholesome out
door recreation in God’s free sun
light and fresh air.”

CLOSE SPACING COTTON
GIVES HIGHEST YIELDS
Close spacing of cotton has given
better yields in extensive tests car
ried out by the State College of
Agriculture and is recommended over
wide spacing. Other stations have
reported similar results, and the gen
eral adoption of the plan is being
urged.
While last season was dry and
generally regarded as unfavorable to
thick spacing, the State College sta
tion reports that higher yields were
returned from this method. In rows
four feet apart, two stalks per hill
in all cases gave a higher yield than
one. The bolls were slightly small
er on the rows not thinned and on
the seven inch spacings, but careful
measurements showed no apprecia
ble difference in length of lint or per
cent lint on the different spacings.
Two plants per hill placed twelve
inches apart gave the highest yield
at the State College station last
year, 1324 pounds of seed cotton
being gathered from an acre spaced
in this manner. The first picking
was highest from this test also.
Two plants per hill fifteen inches
apart ranked next with a slightly
lower,yield than when placed twelve
inches apart.
The lowest yield was obtained
from the area where the plants were
placed one in a hill, eighteen inches
apart.
On reasonably good land, two
plants per hill spaced twelve inches
apart in four foot rows is the recom
mendation of the State College Sta
tion. On poorer land slightly closer
spacing is suggested.

Does Your Back Ache?
Bad Backs Bring Suffering to Many
Hartwell Folks.
Is that dull, constant backache
making you old and miserable? Does
your back throb and ache until it
seems you just can’t keep going? Do
you suffer headaches, dizzy spells
and urinary disorders; feel weak,
tired and worn-out? Then look to
your kidneys. Delay may mean seri
ous kidney sickness! Use Doan’s
Pills—a stimulant diuretic to the kid
neys. Doan’s are recommended by
j Hartwell folks.
Mrs. L. G. Hall, Jackson St., Hart
well, says: “My back gave me a heap
of trouble and I had a tired, achy
feeling. If I did much work, my
back became so tired I could hardly
go. My kidneys were out of order,
and headaches and dizzy spells were
frequent. I purchased one box of
Doan’s Pills from Herndon’s Drug
Store, and after taking them the
backache left and my kidneys acted
regularly. I haven’t had any return
of the trouble.”
Price 60c, at all dealers. Don't
