DEATjjjl OF A BRIGHT YOUNG
PHYSICIAN.
The following account of the death
(Of one of Jones county’s brightest
young physicians is copied from the
3Jacon Toiograph of thelOth inst.
I)r. H. D. McKay, who lived at
the horne of his parents in Jones
comply, ainc miles from Macon, on
the Clinton road, died yesterday
afternoon about 2 o’clock.
The eimtmftanccs of his death
are peculiarly sad for the reason
that it was duo to the terrible mis
take of his bout friend.
TJnb doctor had been suffering all
Saturday night with an aching
tooth. About 3 o’clock yesterday
morning, having suffered so much
that he thought relief could only be
had by other remedies than those he
had been trying, ho aroused his
young friend and Mr.
J. T. Funderburk, and requested
him to go to tl*o office, which was
on Lbo premises, and make up some
papsulcs of quinine. The young
man did as requested, filling six cap
pulos with five grains eq,ch of what
he supposed was quinine, but which
was aft op ward found to be morphine.
Returning to the room lie gave Dr.
McKay four of them. Mr. Funder
burk remarked that as ho had u cold
ho would take somo quinine also,
and tlien swallowed tl»o remaining . .
capsules. Ho then went to bed, but
shortly afterward found himself
quite sick with nausea. Dr. McKay
also complained of the nausea. Mr.
Funderburk wont into the kitchen
and procured some hot water which
ho drank to produce vomiting. Be
coming rclievod, ho wont to the
room and found that the doctor was
still sick and complaining of peculiar
sensations. Ho asked his friend
where bo obtained the quinine, and
was told that it was taken from a
box in the office,
■ Then you havo fixed us bpth/’
paid the doctor,
Air. Funderburk thought the dpc
pdr was qnly joking and wont to hi®
^*4 and want to sleep, but. not until
Jio saw that tho doctor had fallen
apleep.
At breakfast time Mrs. McKay
tried to arouse her son, but failed.
Mr. Funderburk awoke and finding
jt difficult to wake tho doctor,
thought of the remark, “You have
fixed us both.” Tho neighbors were
sent for and a ntossenger sent to
Clinton for Dr. Barron. On his ar
rival he found (lmt Dr. McKay was
poisoned, and a messenger was sent
to Macon for a physician. Dr. W,
C. Gibson, knowing the importance
of promptness, gocured a horse and
buggy at Davis’ stable and started
on his way, but was met by another
buggy coming after him. Changing
(mggies, Mr. Davis’ buggy was sont
back, and he proceeded on his way.
When within half a milo of the Mc
Kqy roeidpneo ho was informed that
the doptpr died at 2 o'clock. Dr.
Gibson wont tq tho b Q uso and found
(hat al) was over, and that overy
jhing possible, under the circum
stances, hud been done to save Dr
McKay.
Air. Funderburk, tbe young man
who had made tho fatal mistake, is
about 22 years of age, and had boon
with Dr. McKay for four years past.
The two wore great friends and con
a taut companions. Tho affection
between them was tho admiration
of tho neighbors. When ho discov
ered his mistake he was crazed
with grief and it is thought by some
that he will lose his mind.
Dr. ^.cj^ay was universally loved
and esteemed. He was 30 years old
and unmarried. Yesterday the
noighbors for miles arouyd visited
fho McKav home to tendor their
sympathy to tho strickon family.
A? to how tho mistake occurred,
there are several theories. It is
thought that the doctor broke tho
bottle which pontaiued the mor
phine. and had placed it in the little
pasteboard box. This fact was un
knqwn to Mr. Funderburk, and as
morphine and quinine are similar in
appearance.it was eaty to mistake
one for the other. No possible
blame is attached to Mr. Funder
