Richard Peters, of Atlanta, who died on tho Cih inst., left an estate valued at a quarter of a mils Hot. dollars. He was buried tho following aftornoon in Atlanta, and Bishop tjuiutard, of Teouessoo, of ficiated. John 0. Campbell, editor of the Atlanta Avalanche, has brought suit for $‘Jo,000 damages against Turn Cobb Jackson, Ed. McCandless, Burton Smith and Harry Johnson, for assaulting him on the streets last September. A regular blizzard prevailed all over tho North and West this week, and railroads were blockaded and business stopped. This section is getting a breath of that breeze at present, and it is the first real cold weather of the winter. Fivo rats stones arc thus related by the Zebulon Journal; vwuie fellow told of a rut that bod-, ded under a hearthstone and came out at night and annoyed tho house hold very much. He filled up tho hole ss&^fh&t firm ftA o with material and built a fire over it- Pretty soon the rat began to claw and kept it up until the hole was opened’ Then it catue out. through the lire without^.yen a wink of the eye. This called for another and the next n...n heard from was; Charley Driver; “I saturated ono of these great big house rats with kerosene'oil once and it was tho most astonishing thing you ov «r saw. Iverson or Col. Dupree, I don’t remember which; anv wav it was a cold day, and wo built up a fire in the stove. 1 reckon— yes I know it—wo had been there an hour, and the stove was red hot, and when the door was opened, three rats jumped out and ran off. There were four of them, Imt one of them, but ono of them burned to death. 1 have tweuty witness to that fact.” Geoego Simmons; “When I first moved to the hotel wo had a fine lot of pickles in sonio tin top glass jars. On Thanksgiving Day, just »s certain as my’namo’a George, the rats gnawed through them tin tops cat; all the pickles out amt put a No. 4 shoe in the place. No joking about that.” A correspondent of the Macon Telegraph in a recent article con turning the towns along the tine of the C. & M. TV 11. makes mention of them as follows. Cl-INTOV. This is one. I had almost said, of the “dead towns of Georgia,” least comparatively speaking. It has but one general store now, that s..f K x. It was hardly fair to class' it among tho. “dead).towns'of Gfojgia/' aSjit slid contians.300.in habitance, two schools (cue white and and one colored) and quite a number of neat residences occupied by a re fined and. cultivated people. But in abusiuoss point of view the remark is almost literally true, MoHTrcur.Lo. was my next stopping place where 1. was hospitably entertained at the Merriwether House by Mr. G. \Y. Ei'hornton.the nevr proprietor, who is liberally patronized. This town was particularly described in a recent letter lo the Tei-KGUarh, and I shall only say tlmt it continues to im prove steadily and a number of new buildings are in process of erection. Another hotel, too, lias been opened by Mr. Shorn.'!! and is well spoken of. A leading industry is that of J. L. Campbell who rims a large tan nery and shoe factory, and patentee ofa noted horse collar. The recently married and genial, ordinary, Swanson, was re-elected for the third time in January. A large breadth of laud has been sown in oats, but there is a materi al falling in the demand for guano. This is accounted for m part by the increased price of the standard brands and the short crops of the past year and consequent scarcity of money^ ------CtSsxi^-'-* STATE PENSIONS. x The Blanks Arrive and the Soldiers Can Now Git Their Pensions.* Judge R.
