IN MEMORIAL.
It is my painful duty to announce
the death of my friend; Hon, Na
thaniel S. Glovpr fof Jonos County
Ga, which occured oil the 26th day
of January 1889 at 1 o’clock ]>. ni.
at his residence in sa'd county. It
•was my earnest desire, that some
other able pen would write appro
priate Eu'ogics lo his memory. He
was several times a member of tho
L^giHlutuie from his County and
twice a member of the , Senate, and
a Sheriff of Ins county for muny
years and a .staunch democrat all
through life. Ile.was a member of
the J2th Ga regiment during the
Confederate since when he con
tracted Rheumatism, of which he
never rocovored, tboiug over fifty
years of age when he entered the
service. lie amassed an immense
fortune before and after the war,
nnd became a largo money loaner,
never oharging over tho legal rate ol
interest for his money, and many
are the men of this County today
who ate’indebted td him for .the
homes which they own. Ho ain
ply povided for ell of his children
during Ijfe, was twice married, leav
ing a wife to mourn his loss, for he
yus a.devolod.husband, kind ..father
and a good provider. Ir, was my
good fortunp to only know him in
lii3 latter days and liis motto was,
“Energy will do anythin that can
be done in this world and no talents,
no circumstances, no opportunities,
will make a man without it.” He
was a number of the Primitive Bap
tist Church at New Hope, and
Charity was one of his most promi
nent characteristics, for I have
known him to help his greatest
enemies. llishonoiB survive, him
He was called away from a loving
fireside and associations most dearly
prized, from a confiding constitcncj
and from the enjoyment of every
favor offortane. He was born in
Edgefield District, South Carolina
on May Uth 1813 and moved to
Georgia when quite a youth aud
did his first plowing with hickory
withe traces ami at one
owned a whole District of land. A
Christian genitor, true and devout.
He is entitled to tho Honors which
wo are now awarding to his memory.
But in the more endearing charac

silent tribute of a tear moistens the
eye of the grateful poor, to utter
higher praises than wo can embody
iuaMemoriam. Let him rest in
pence for he has nobly earned his
li}gh*reward. “IKK.”

EGCENTRIC BOYS.
“I wish I knew what to do with
my boy Dan,” said Mr. Brown,
with a worried look on his face.
“What is the matter with him?”
asked liis friend, Mr: Jones. “Is he
a scamp?”
Well, no, was the slow reply, 1
can’t say that She is disobedient,
saucy or mischievous, but he'don’t
act like other boys, somehow.
In what way?
Well, ho don’t take much to
books, although he keeps up iu his
class pretty well; but he don't hank
er af.er book-learning. He’s the
greatest boy to prowl around the
woods, bringing home bugs and
roots and rocks, fhen he has a
whole lot of gimcracks in his room,
and he’s alw*yp pecking through
microscopes, fooling with chemicals
and making experiments with one
thing and another, I declare i
don’t know what's going to
of him, and I hate to punish him
because I know he don’t mean any
thing wrong. It’s just Dgn’a ec
centricity, I suppose,
Mr. Jones laid his hand kindy on
his neighbor’s arm.
“I don’t know what you w id do,”
he said, gravelybut I Know what
I would do if I had such a boy. I’d
buy In m a fine microscope, all tho
chemicals ho could u«e, and all the
books on natural history he could
read. I wouldn’t mind if ho was the
tail end of liis class if ho was a
genius,”
“A genius, Mr. Jones!
“Yes, sir You never saw an ec
centric boy in your life who didn't
develop into something out of the
ordinary, unless his parents crushed
liis boyish aspirations, and made
him believe that the was nothing to
be learnd outside of books.
Mr. Brown was only half convin
yet Mr. Jones was right.
The mere idler ot a boy may
grow up a shiftless man, but the
eccentric boy, who studies nature
and seeks for knowledge outside of
the school-room, has in him the
making qf an inventor, naturalist,
geologist or learped man.
Such boys stand in nped of en
couragement, rather than reprooi.
