Last! Tuesday was the day adver
t Used to receive bids to repair the
V court house. The commissioners
I were in session and a good many
sealed bids were before them—
riinging from $1400 to $2500, but
all were rejected, and the board
will meet again on the first Tues
day in next month, when they
will contract to have the house
partially or temporarily repaired,
the commissioners being opposed
to making much of an outlay on
the old building, but recognizing
the necessity of having some place
to hold court next April, have
concluded to patch up the old
foundation for that purpose, when
they propose to leave it to the
people as to whether they want a
new court or not, and if so, where
they want it located. What to
do with the court house is an enig
ma that the commissioners don’t
Biimi to be able to solve.
Col. R. V. Hardeman is consid
ered about the best bird shot in
the city of Macon, and among the
best in Middle Georgia, and it is
not often that he finds a man that
can interest him iu a day’s hunt.
But the Col. came to Jones last
Saturday and took Charlie Green
along to show him where the birds
were. Now Charlie is no mean
ehot himself, and it wasn't long
before the Col. found, that to sus
tain hie reputation, he had to do
a little better than usual; but do
as fee could, he was fairly out
matched* for they came home with
Charlie in the lead*—having bagg
ed 28 bjrda tfe the Col’s. 13- If
we bad a real bad cage in court
tee would employ the Col. to de

for a good shot on the wing, we
would be obliged to pass the ge
nial Col. by *nd select his guide,
Charlie Green. When you want
more birds. Col,, come over, for
Charlie keeps his gun ready and
his nerves are always steady.

HADDOCK NEWS NOTES.
Mr. Editor:—You stated in
your last issue of The News that
the locals from Haddocks wen
4 ‘pied. 1 ’ Now I tell you this
week the correspondent from
Haddocks himself is “pied”—
spotted, for I think lie’s in bod
sick with measles. I hope he’ll
soon be able to renew his corres
pondence for your paper and to
pursue his studies at school. 1
therefore, under the circumstan
ces, have decided to represent out
portion of the county this week.
Master Dolph Bonner, son ol
Capt J R Bonner, lias been very
sick with typhoid pneumonia, but
I’m glad to report that his condi
tion is much improved, and if he
sustains no back-set will soon be
himself again.
We learn that Miss Betsy Rick
et, an aged lady who is the aunt
of Col. J H Blount, is very sick at
the home of W J Mathis, near
Blountsville. We hope her sick
ness will not prove fatal.
W G Godard, of the firm Keller
& Godard, has sold his interest to
F H Keller, his former partner,
and has gone to look after his
farming interest near Stevens Pot
tery. We hope him success in his
new business. His post office in
the future will be Stevens Pottery.
The measles, grippe, and pneu
monia have claimed numerous vic
tims In our community of late,
but we are glad to report no one
ill at this time.

make up the deficit. If we
eeive our state educational funds
as a help, it will prove a blessing
to us, but if we set idly and nig
gardly by and rely upon it solely
to educate our children, it will
prove a curse instead. Why is it
that so many of <>ur boys hav>
been turned away from tin* college

Want of prepmation. Shall we
offer to the teachers of our schools
the small pittance given us by tin*
state, and thereby drive every
first class teacher from our borders
and fill their places with inexpe
rienced ones, thereby closing fho
doors of Mercer and the different
State schools, to our boys, and
have it said of them they failed
for the want of instruction?
We are anticipating much pleas
ure and profit at the coming of
our pastor, G W Farr, into our
hbmes and pulpit next Saturday
and Sunday. He has endeared
himself very much to our people
and it is with delight we await his
coining.

I have often heard of a series of
lectures, sermons and debates,
but never heard of a series of
dreams until the two Bobs got it
up not long ago. They agreed on
a certain night to begin dreaming,
both were to dream of the same
girl. The first night they dream
ed very nearly the same tiling,
the second night both began where
they left off the night before, bul
differed slightly in their dreams.
The third and fourth nights they
started whore they left off the
night before, still varying some.
The fourth night ended rather
abruptly the dream of Bob No. 2,
but No. 1 went on for two nmie
nights before completing bis
dream, when be found himself
