County Fair*.
With tho beginning of the
/county fair several years ago
/which, by the way, has proved a
profitable inveptmept for its stock¬
holders, to say nothing of the
good that has come to tho county
itself) tho Telegraph began advo¬
cating county fairs. Several others
pave followed (he example ol
Jones, notably Honsh u, and now
ft is annojiincod that Baldwin will
litive n fair next year.
And why not Putnam, Twiggs,
jDooly, Crawford, Wilkinsnn,Mon¬
roe, Hancock, Laurens, Dodge
and many other* in middle aud
southern Georgia?
Why not twenty-five county
fairs within a radius of ono hund¬
red miles of Macon, to bo picked
up and moved to the Ktato Fair
nt Macon to contest for tho coun¬
ty exhibit premiums?—Macon
Telegraph.
The Telegraph knows exactly
wl;at it takes to make a good State
Pair. If twenty-five counties v.ilj
hold fairs next year and carry the
beet of their exhibits to Macon to
the State Fair, (that’s where tho
State Fair will bo hold) tho people
of the stale will see something,
the like of which hg* never been
seen before.
Ifut we wish to warp our neigh¬
bors against, the idea that there is
money in county fairs. Tho expe¬
rience of the Jones County Fair
Association lias been that it ro*
quires the greatest skill in man¬
to jnako a coijjily fair
pay expenses, The genera! good
to tho county is nil that
Nothing elso is expected, The
stock of the Fair Anssocintion
will pay n dividcml this year, but
this comes front tho premium
awarded tho county at the State
Fair.
Sami Hill* in Aonusb
Tho editor of tho Savannah
Press ami! up to Macqu during
ilia .State Fair and after looking
In at tho Jones county exhibit,
said;
"Jones is a small countv and very
little is known of it in middle Ueoi-
gia. It is full of sand hills mid peo¬
ple riding through Join on 1 lie cais
would not imagine the county capa¬
ble of diversified growth.”
It will be romemborod that the
editor of tho Press is .from the
homo of tho most famous military
punch in tho United States, that
Bn mo punch that knocked the
pegs from under I)owey and caused
Hobson to forgot th ■ art of ki Sk*-
pig. We don’t say tho editor of
tho Press had had any of caul
punch, but something is wrong
when a man makes such remarks
about Jones county. Anaway, wo
would like to show the editor of
the Press over tho county and lot
him see that ho is wrong.
