One of the most desirable adjuncts
to a good dairy farm, and at the same
time (ha hardest to got. Is a good,

In wet weather. At the Hoard’s Dairy¬
man farm Vve have succeeded In con¬
structing Just such a ya'rd, and that,
too, in a comparatively Inexpensive
manner. The soil underlying the yard,
wherein run abdut fifty cows and
heifers, Is a heavy clay. Any one of
experience knows what that sort of
soil means In a wet time. Into this
yard three years ago we drew three
carloads of coal cinders, und It was
soon as hard as a macadamised road,
and Has continued so to this day, It is
easily scraped by the use of a two-
liorso barnyard scraper, and there Is
never any mud in it. When we re¬
member the old-fashioned barnyard,
with the cows wallowing knee-deep In
manure, we bless the day that set us
to making a coal cinder yard.
An Ornamental Group.
One of the most striking objects in
ornamental planting on our lawns for
a dozen years or more has been a group
of nine specimens of Prunus Pissardi
(purple leaved plum) surrounded by a
ring of variegated leaved Cornelian
cherry (Cornus mas var). The Pissardi
plums were planted within a circle
about three feet apart from one an¬
other; the Cornelian cherries a little

closer together, the sixteen specimens
completely surrounding the others.
Every visitor for years has admired
tills group, with Its striking contrast
of color In leafage, that of the Cor¬
nelian cherry appearing almost white
against the deep purple of the central
group. Finally, however, the plum
trees got large, running up high and
threatening to choke out the Cornelian
cherries (which, in their variegated
form, are rather delicate, anyway),
the whole group nppearlug out of pro¬
portion to the size of the surrounding
lawn. Figure 1 gives a cross section
of the group at this time. Something
had to be done, and as the San Jose
scale had secured a foothold In the

I hud not yet seen Volume III- of the

therefore, It Is well to head back the
trees frequently;” but it occurred to me

that the ouly thing to do, both to get
the group reduced to proper limits as to.

cut the plums down to stubs, andtthis
was done one spring, the stubs them¬

The dutch sea wall.
Remarkable Engineering Plan to Keep
Back the Ocean.
The backbone of thlB tremendous en¬
gineering project la the great sea dike,
which la to perform the all-important
function of shutting out the North
Sea—keeping the ancient ehemv at a
safe distance. This once accomplished,
all that remains is simple. Probably
the Dutch are the only hydraulic en-
glndets In the world who would calm¬

sea, swept by great tides apd lofty
tidal waves, from an Inner body of
water ineasurlng twenty-live miles

It, but they know Just how they are
going to do it; they have counted
every cubic foot of timber, every
pound of stone, every willow -twig,
every day’s labor that will be required.
They know what they are about. They
even have estimated exactly how long
the work will take.
This, the greatest of all sea embank¬

will extend from the mainland of
North Holland a short distance across
a shallow strait to the Island of Wier-
ingen, thence across the Zuyed Zee
,
to the coast of Friesland. The total
length of this “afsluit dijk” Is 24.8
miles. Massive it -must be, firm as a
rock, to withstand the attacks of the
storms which will beat against it
from the North Sea, to resist the pres-
sure of the Ice which In winter will
drive with terrible force upon its ram¬
parts. Despite the fact that there are
here no rock foundations, and that the
whole structure must be planted upon
the sandy bottom, the Dutch have no
fear. All their lives they have been
struggling with Just such unpromising

In Denmark a girl of 12 and a boy
of 14 can marry. In most places the
limit for age is 18 for men and 16 for
women. In Germany a man can onily
contract marriage before his twenty-
first year when he is specially declared
of age, and this can only be done
when he has completed his eighteenth
year. The law of France is specially
notable for stipulating about the legal
rights of each party, and the relations
of each to the earnings of the other.
The man who marries a French woman
becomes by French law liable_ to be
called on for the support oi his wife’s
near relatives if they are in need.
What’s It For, Anyway?
