A LurKC Vote Desintble.
address ti;n Democratic .
In an to
voters of the Sixth
district, printed in another col-
umn Congressman Rnrtlatt very
properly emphasizes the idea llial
“While there is no opposing can-
didnte, it is important that every
Democratic vote he cast for con-
grossman in the coming primary,
us that will virtually amount to
the election, nnd the] number of
votes cast in tbe primary will ba
taken as the real vote of the Sixth
district. A full vote will go far
towards meeting the charges made
by Republicans that the vole of
the South is suppressed in con-
gressiomil elections simply be¬
cause the vote in llto
election is generally smajl, owing
to tlu fnct that there is no oppos-
jug Republican candidate. » J
The Telegraph emphasized this
suggestion two years ago, and it is
as important now. There should
be a full vote cast.
Mr James D Porter, of Nash¬
ville says that Turn Watson is
mistaken, that Cleveland didn’t
invite Fred Douglas and his wife
to a social function. On tho con-
triuy he says:
“Mr. Watson lias been misled
by the presence of Fred Douglas
and his wife at an official recep¬
tion given by I ho President to the
public. This was announced U
the press at Washington, acoom-
paniod by a statement that tile
public and all otlicials c« mints-
sinned by the President, and tlu ir
friends, were invited. No other
invitations were extended. Fred
Douglas held a commission i t
that time as Recorder of Deeds
lor the District of Columbia,
signed by President Arthur. I nder
the rulo he exercised the right
common to all officials of the class
named. I saw him pass, with iu-
while wife, in review before tbe
l'residont nnd Mrs Cleveland. He
bowed and passed oil and out, ol
the White House with un immense
throng of callers.

Tho “reaffirmers,” that is
those that follow Mr Bryan to the
extent of demanding at Si Louis
the free and unlimito i coinage ol
silver at tho ratio of 10 to 1, con¬
trolled the Denmerutio state con¬
vention in Kansas, but they show¬
ed some signs of returning sunitA
by draw ing the lino at Hoarst.
It was exp cted that several ol
the Northwestern states, which
would in no event cast a Demo¬
cratic vote in tho electoral collegi
next November, would “reaffirm”
according to tho Bryan formula,
ami also support tho Hoarst pro¬
paganda, but the action in this
case comes as a distinct surprise.
It was conceded that there would
be a small Hoarst column mad«
up of small and irretrievable Re¬
publican states, and Kansas " in¬
put in that column by all thoet
figured on the'probahle results. It
was not only confidently claimed
by the lleurst papers, but it was
conceded by the Barker people.
We think it is yet possible that
there may he some mistake about
it, lor if not in Kansas "here, O
where, is there any fertile ground
for the nourishment of M r.
Ilcarst’g ambition?
But the non-partisan Associated
Press tells us that the New York
publisher has lust out in Kansas.
Too bad ! It seems tube disap¬
pointing all round, It looks now
ns if Henrst will not get the 20 )
out of the 1,00 votes in the con¬
vention which have been conced¬
ed to him, A few more snob de¬
velopments nnd tho Hoarst party
in the convention will not b.
able to order a yea aud nay vote,
and the nomination will go to
Dut'ker by acclamation.
