liusgian Pronunciation.
Numerous correspondents Ipivc asked
to r information as to fhe pronuncin-
tion of the names which figure in the
war news. It would l>e impossible in
any brier eoinpass to give satisfactory
rules for the pronunciation of Russian
names. Generally speaking, the vow¬
els ave sounded as follows: “A” as in
"far;” “e” ns in “mot;” “i” ns in “nm-
chine;" “o” ns in ‘tone;’’ “u” ns in
“rude.” Initial “o” often tins the sound
of “n;” thus “Orloff” is sounded ns
though spelled “Arloff.” An “e” in n
final syllable often hns Die sound of
“yo” in “yoke,” so thnt “pravezh” is
spoken as though spelled “pravyozh.”
The eonsanauts have much the same
force as in English—“ch” ns in
"church;” "sh” ns in “Wish;” “fell”
ns "eh" In the German “icli;” “it” ns
“v final "z” as “ss.” So far as Jap¬
anese, Chinese and Korean names are
concerned, simpler rules prevail. In
the original the names are not spelled
at all but are represented with word
signs. In English, therefore, they have
been expressed phonetically. They are
thus to he pronounced as they are
spelled. Many of them have "niter-
Mating spellings, but these need cause
no uncertainty ns to the pronunciation,
since the various spellings all express
the same sounds, Thus Che-Foo is
also spelled Chi-Fn. But we need only
to remember thnt the “1” in the latter
form lias the continual sound of Igng
”e” to perceive that both forms are
sounded the same as though spelled
Chee-Eoo. So Kin-Chan. But the lat-
ter is a German form, and in German
“nu” is so „nded like “ow” in Euglisb.

There is somethin;; particularly enjoyable
about going to a Pie-Nie. The very word
Pic-Nie brings pleasant anticipations of a

fascination. T he fresh air and exercise
contribute to give a hearty appetite to all
