It has been said the Jones conn
ty fairs and the fruit industry has
greatly enhansed the value ol
Jones county lands. This is
doubtless true but one wouldn't
judge so from the tux digest
There is an increased number of
acres given in for taxation but a
decrease in valuation, as compar¬
ed with last of .$141)10. What we
need is a board of tax assessors.
By reason of the fact that n
merchant at Grays Station, Cof¬
fee county, being killed
by a negro last Saturday
night, our phone was
kept busy oil Monday, explaining
to her anxious enquirers that none
of our merchants was the unfor¬
tunate victim. Our post office is
Gray, without the station added.
As the probabilities are that
Jones will make no county exhib¬
it at the state fair some of our en¬
terprising farmers should see to it
that she is represented at least
in an individual w-ay. The repu¬
tation already made isof too much
moment to be lost so early. We
have several farmers who could
make creditable and winning in¬
dividual exhibits.
Notw ithstanding the -decree of
our board of education eliminat¬
ing public schools during the re¬
mainder of the year, every com¬
munity should see that their
schools are run during the fall
and winter months. Emph y
and pay your own teachers, and if
you must economize don’t do so
ct the expense of your children's
education, Our experience and
observation convince us that pri¬
vate schoels have many advan¬
tages over public ones- Existing
circumstances should not be an
excuse for any of our schools to
remain closed until another year.
Fiom force of habit we can
hardly refrain from writing son,e-
.U«ng urging preparations for our
county fair. Then wo remember
that Jones county fairs are insti¬
tutions merely to be remembered,
whereby we confess to a feeling of
sadness. Ihe News modestly
claims a small slice of credit for
the success of these institutions
and points with pride to the vast
amount of good when done county and |
people, and we realize that
they are things of the past we find j
ourselves casting about for some-
thing to take their places. Our
people cannot afford to stand still
and something of a a public na¬
ture should call our*people to¬
gether at least once a year. i
