My Trip Through South
Georgia.
It is °aid one half the world
wonders what thn other half looks
like, what they do and how liny
live. Wo might obtain cousidei-
able en light men t on l ho mihject
by delving in countless literature,
and yet not obtain so accurate an
impression as wewould he going to
the spot ourselves and making a
perianal and thorough
t ion.
That is just what I did in a
small way lust week. You of
course must not suppose that I
have been clear around to the
other side of the globe, but I
muna e to get away from the odl
home long enough to run down
South Georgia on a little visit
relatives and friends which are
found scattered all the way from
Macon to Brunswick.
To those who may never have
had the pleasure of Inking a (ly¬
ing trip through the wire grass
country, and through tlio suit
water marshes to old Brunswick
by the sea, u short review of my
experience may bo interesting.
There is about as much differ¬
ence between the old red clay
Georgia hills, and tl.o low, flat
marshy country along the Bruns¬
wick coast, us there is between
day and night. After leaving
Oordele, tho country seems to
elope off gradually to one vast
level, covered with turpentine
farms und wire grass, ui til vith-
lii ten milosof Brunswick wo find
ourselves in the midst o; salt wa¬
ter mur.-hes, and a country thick-
Jy covered with tall rushes, c-ane
brake and cypress trees, and we
begin to think of ‘gators, and
other possible denizens equally as
obnoxious.
As our t-ruin comes in Higlit of
Brunswick, completely circling
the city, we come in full view of
tho sound, and catch u hurried
glimpse of the open ocean in the
distance. Tho train finally stops
at the depot on the docks, and
ns we stop off, our eyes are greet¬
ed with tho sight of countless
largo si a going vessels of all sizes,
and from various foreign ports,
all busily engaged during week
days, in either unloading their
cargoes of miscellaneous freight,
or reloading with cotton, lumber,
cross ties and naval stoics.
Wu begin to breathe in the salt
water air, which is heavily ming¬
led with tho order of fish and oys¬
ters, and our appetites begin u
rise at the rate of fit teen degree*
an ho ir, like a thonnometor on n
July day ; and as we look seaward,
our lit arts begin to beat faster in
a iticipation of a ride down the
open sea. But it is Sunday, and
we begin to realize that no boats
are running at Ibis Season of the
year on that day, but find that all
the ship crews are religiously ob-
eerv ng the Sabbath. We are al¬
so incidentally reminded of th<*
fact that no one works on Sunda)
i xorpt railroad men and cooks,
and we resign our hope of a sea
trip until the morrow, and turn
our steps toward the homes oi
friends, where we are feasted on
the fat of the land (ami sea),
1’iouiptly at 8:30 Monday iimr-
ning, the little steamer "He*
Bie”‘ of Brunswick, Captain
Thompson commanding, steamed
out of the harbor with our litth
party oi seven aboard, and head
ed for St Simon Island, !ayin,i. (

and in a good humor, so much so
it occurred to me that "Pacific’ !
would have been a more finite
name for the great slumberin;

The party spent n couple of I

were in grout abundance, hut o

sea sickness and home, and the

dreams might prove time, soon

We returned home t'to follow-

pleasant recollections and
experiences, and w ith butotio re-
we could not remaii

But wo must return again soim
day. Such trips are well calcu-
luted to remove the hard line*
and wrinkles of care and troubb
from anyone; to make the old
feel young again, ami to provide
much profitable food for futu e
thought. Of course we are glue

Blanks will be sent to each of
i he Chairmen for signatures, and
it is earnestly hoped and expected
hat they will secure the name
nid promise of every farmer in
• heir respective districts to reduce
their cotton acreage and also a
out ting off in the amount of gua¬
no used. 1! thiiir signatures are
oot obtained before it is suggested
that all meet at their various vot¬
ing precincts on Saturday, April
1st, and perfect their organiza¬
tions. This i* the most impor¬
tant feature of the whole move¬
ment, and unless the districts
take the initiatory steps toward
organization, the county organi-
zuti' n will be helpless.
After obtaining tlio signatures
of tlio farmers in your districts
•oml a copy of the list to tho
jounty meeting on the second
Monday in April und each name
will lie enrolled as members of
the county organization.
In selecting men in the differ¬
ent districts care was taken to
got those who would take enough
interest t-o see their neighbors and
make tho organization county-
wide. See that each one of you
perform tho duties nobly and
well.
This'is tho most important
movement that ever confronted
the Southern people, and if yr u
would protect home and lovi d
ones and see this beautiful south¬
land of ours prosper and grow,
do your part toward this happy
end. All over the cotton belt
farmers are organizing, and to¬
day they present such a solid
front that their enemies are be-
coming alarmed, and their mouth
piece — Theodore Brice — has
changed his tactics and instead
of threats is actually on his knees
—as it were—begging the farmers
to dispose of their holdings. A
few more days and a few more
nights the battle will be whipped
and the victory ours,
Stand firm ; hold to what you
have, reduce your cotton acreage, j
plant largely of food crops iuu
tho time is not far distant when ,
vou can hid them defiance, and
t.ocome what God intended vou
sl.ould , ,,, be—the most , independent , f
people on earth.
