POME FIGURES SHOWING THE PROBA¬
BLE COST TO EVERY TAX PAVER
TO BUILD A NEW COURT
HOUSE.
It least two grand juries of our
county have recommended that
we have a new court house. Ev
ery public , spirited ■ i citizen ®ou*
c des that the present old time,
worn, antiquated and dangerous
rtTu.r „ should . ... be discarded , ... and j a
new and more modern building
erected. There is no doubt at all
that a large majority of our tax
payers stand ready to lie taxed for
u new house. There ore a few,
however, who A re opposed to »»•
ing taxed for that purpose,
iug under the impression that the
tax would be oppressive mid that
wo are not able at this time to
bear the extin burden. Of these
we would nsk, when will wo bo in
better position? Our people are
fairly prosperous, our county out
of debt with money in the treasu¬
ry, and the immediate future is
bright and promising. Our sister
counties, with much better hou-
Si s, mo tearing down and build-
j ig anew. Then too, in ourcase.it
is not luxury J or pride 1 that pleads 1
the str- nger, but , necessity. . In
the opinion of many our court
house is not altogether safe, and
if it should penhuuce fall while
OMiupitd hy citizens our people
would lie burdened indeed ns a
consequence. In addition to this
danger all of the valuable books
.and papers of the county are ex¬
posed to the ravages of fire, with
no prospects of protection aw long
as the present, building is allowed
to stand, The cost and inconvo-
nience of such a disaster needs no
comment. 'To argue that we have
excaped , thus , far , and , that . you
feel secure in the future is silly,
and because (lie old house has
stood for many years is no guar-
anteo that it will stand the trials

A SPLKNDTD 6H0WIX0 MADE—BART¬
LETT ADDRESSES THE FARMERS
OK JONES.
The cotton Growers convention
of Jones county met in Clinton
Inst Monday, President John *1'
W’jjliafua presiding. The largest
gathering of the year was present,
mid when reports as to the re¬
duction of mrertge and guano
wore called for eveiv district to
tile county, with one or two ex¬
ceptions, responded.
While tiie monthly meetings of
the association wore hut slimly
attended, and the lenders were
somewhat discouraged, the re-
ports of last Monday were re-as¬
suring nod demonstrated the
fact, that our farmers were alive
to the importance of reduction.
While many have declined tc as¬
sist in organization nearly all
were convinced that n reduction
was absolutely necessary, and
from the reports made it is ap¬
parent to all that Jones county
farmers will do their part in the
important work of lessening the
number of bales and thereby forc¬
ing the prices up. The encourag¬
ing report also comes that there
is more corn and other food crops
planted in the county Ilian in
many years before. While our
fanners have failed to encourage
organization it is indeed gratify¬
ing to know flint they have car¬
ried out the chief object of the
movement in this direction.
The following reports by dis¬
tricts were made by men who have
taken a careful survey of their
surroundings, and from observa¬
tion and inquiry are satisfied that
their reports aro approximately
enraect. The guano reports wore
made by both farmers and guano
agents. The reports
