We are always glad to have our
subscribers send or bring us
items of news. If each one of
our large list of readers would
give us one item each week what
a grand local paper we could
have. Send in anything but pol-

The cigarette fiend is being hit
hard upon all sides in the busi¬
ness world. The Chicago. Bur¬
lington and Quincy Railroad
Company has announced that
every employe found smoking
cigarettes, the company will
no longer give him emplopment,
they have ascertained to their
satisfaction that the cigarette
fiend cannot, or does not, per¬
form his duties in as satisfactory
a manner as does the other fel¬
low. This is poor encouragement
for our boys.

If you want a prosperous town
where people can come who are
disposed to make homes, then do
away with and bury from sight
all jealously and spite work more
for common prosperity and mu¬
tual benefit. Wake up, rub your
eyes, roll up your sleeves and go
to work. Do not work with fear
and trembling, .but take for grant
ed that blood will tell. Leave
results to themselves, borrow no
trouble, but all unite to make it
the biggest kind of a town. “Go
to work”.
There are two kind of girls in
j the world, the girl who works and
the girl who gads. Commend us
to the former. Work lends dig¬
nity to a pretty girl, is an added
j | charm to her. The girl who
j works, God bless her, combines
i the useful and ornamental. She
might gad about, roll on sofas,
gossip and read story books, but
she | prefers to he of some account
in the world and goes out stenog-
ropher, teacher, saleslady or
housekeeper, bravely makes her
own way. Such are the salt, of
the earth and of such is the king¬
dom of heaven.
A school master once said to his
pupils to the boy who would
make the best piece
composition in five minutes on
“How to overcome Habit,’, he
would give a prize, When the
five minutes had expired a lad
nine years saood up aud said:
“Well, sir, habit is hard
overcome. If you take off the
first letter it does not change
j ‘abit.’ If you take off
letter you still have a ‘bit’ left,
If you take off still another,
1 whole of ‘it’ remains. If
! take off another it is not
used up, all of which goes " to
thftt if you want to ot rid
I habit you must throw it off
|together.” Result—He trail it.
