SILKWORMS IN IOWA.
111. Hxp.rimont of An Italian at Del
Molar. Surer..fill So Far.
Mark Chieaa. nn Italian, Is success¬
fully raising silkworms at Des Moines,
Iowa. The eggs were brought from
Italy by a relative. Two years ago ho
made the experiment first, but the per¬
son who brought the eggs carried them
In his pocket and they hatched on ship¬
board, so the worms had to be thrown
into the sea. This tlmo the person to
whom the eggs were Instrusted sus¬
pended them on a string so that they
got cool nlr on the ocean and on tho
railway trains. Arrlvlug at Dcs
Moines, they were put into cold stor¬
age until the mulberry leaves were
ready for them. Them upon being put
Into a warm room, they hatched lu one
day.
Of the supposed 8,000 eggs from ten
silk moths about 4,000 hatched, which
result, Mr. Chlesa says, Is better than
the nvernge in Italy. Tho greatest
difficulty has been to find mulberry
leaves for the worms. They eat about
three wagonloads a day, nnd never
stop eating for a minute, but eat all
the time, day and night They must
he fed about fifteen times a day and
several times during the night. Tho
worms, In devouring tho mulberry
leaves, make a noise like rain on the
roof. By lively hunting the food for
tho worms has been provided, nnd
they are well developed and healthy,
about three Inebes long, nnd are Just
beginning to weave their cocoons.
There seems to he no reason why tho
Industry should not succeed. Mr.
Chlesa has brought a woninn from
Italy who has had thirty years’ cx-
pericr.ee with silkworms and she snys
they are doing as well ns any she ever
saw.
The experiment Is the first that Is
known lo have been made In thc AVest,
and Is certainly the first that has been
successful. It has attracted as much
attention ns a circus in Dcs Moines,
and the number of visitors Is very
large. The owner is a good-natured
man nnd lie cheerfully and proudly
shows (lie Industrious 4,000 to all who
care to see them.
If they turn out ns well as the <
promise to, Mr. Chlesa will buy is
large farm, plant it to mulberry trees
and go Into the business of raising silk¬
worms nijd producing silk on a largo
scale. From the experience he lias
had In America and Italy, where liis
father Is a silk producer, lie sees no
reason why the Industry should not be
entirely successful in Iowa.

IWOB TRICKED THE SHERIFF
Man Accused of Murder Is Riddled With Bul=
lets In His Cell.
THE LYNCHERS ADOPTED A MOST UNIQUE RELE
Victim Was Si Smith Who Was Being Held For the
Murder of William Bell In Habersham County, Ga.
In the Hull county jail at Gaines-
villo, On., Friday at midnight, Si
Smith, the farmer who killed Wm.
Hell, tho commercial traveler from At-
lauta, several months ago, was shot to
death right under the eyes of Sheriff
Mundy.
The shooting was done while Smith
was within the steel cage in the
very heart of tho jail, and was wit-
nessed by every prisoner confined
along with tho slayer of Boll.
Shortly before midnight,
Munday, who lives at the jail, was
awakened by a man ut his door, who,
when tho sheriff had answered the
summons, staled that he was tho slier-
id'of (Jilmer county and had a prison-
or ho wanted locked up for the night,
In the dark Sheriff Mundy could see
nothing but three or four men just
outside the building and he admitted
them without hesitation.
“We have had a long chnse,” said
tho man representing himself ns tho
sheriff, “and a hard fight to get here,
Now we want yon to keep him safe
for us till morning.”
The supposed prisoner stopped for¬
ward. llis hands wero hound, and in
every way ho played well tho rolo as¬
signed him.
Lending the way through the hall
Sheriff Mundy ascended the steps to
the second floor, on which tho cells
arc located. Just as he reached tho
door to the largo iron cage in which
the prisoners are kept over night,
Sheriff Mundy found a gnu thrown in
his fnce. It came suddenly, and for
the second threw him off his balance.
said one of the men almost
Sheriff Mundy realized what was
ing on, “and we want it d—n quick.
There’s no use losing nny time. AVo
ltavo come for Si Smith, aud we in¬
tend to have him. Ho shuck out.”
f As ho listened to the demnud
Mundy was glancing about, and much
to his surprise he observed that overy
man around him hud covered his face.
Looking straight at the man who
had personated the sheriff and who
appeared to he the leader of the gang,
Sheriff Mundy cooly remarked:
“Those keys nre downstairs. In
my hurry I didn’t know that I hud left
them. ”
“Well, go get them quick,” replied
the leader of the crowd. “These two
men will go with you and see that you
don’t get away,” and the man desig¬
nated two of the crowd by pointing
them out.
Leading tho way, he hurried down
the stairway, followed by the two
men. As ho wont ho was scheming
some plan to escape from tho men or
get nn nlnrm out which would bring
him tho assistance needed. Half way
down the steps he was brought to n
sudden stop by the rattle of firearms
iu the room ho had just left. AVheel-
ing around, he bounded up the steps
until he reached the big room in
which tho cage was located.

roads was reduced by 0,166 miles

abundant safety against escape. Nat-

was opened. Tho first dis¬
charge frightened the other prisoners
within their cells. Smith turned to floe,
but was too late. Six bullets pierced
his body, and it is not certain that
either one of them alone would not
have produced death.
As soon ns Sheriff' Mundy could
make certain of the security of his
prisoners, ho gave the alarm nnd in a
short time a great crowd had gathered.
As soon ns the situation became known
the feeling of the people became in¬
tense. A hurried search for the per¬
petrators of the most unique crime in
the history of Georgia’s criminal an¬
nals was begun. But the men had
gone like they came. Nothing fore¬
told their coming and nothing was
left behind indicating whither they

secure a clew to the members of the
mob, and with tho coming of day an
active and energetic search was male.

ERFECT womanhood depends on perfect health.
Nature's rarest gifts of physical beauty vanish before
pain.
Sweet dispositions turn morbid and fretful.
The possessions that win good hus- _
bands and keep their love should be guard¬ PEMFEQT
ed by women every moment of their lives.
The greatest menace to woman’s per¬ wm1AN-
manent happiness in life is the suffering
that comes from derangement of the moD
feminine organs.
Many thousands of women have realized
this too late to save their beauty, barely in time to save their
lives. Many other thousands have availed of the generous in¬
vitation of Mrs. Pinkham to counsel all suffering women free
of charge.
Mrs. H. J. Garretson, Bound Brook, N. J., writes: “Dear
Mrs. Pinkham— I have been tak¬
ing Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
r Compound with the best results
and can say from my heart that
* your medicines are wonderful.
My physician called my trouble
■ i chronic inflammation of the left
ovary. For years I suffered very
much, but thanks to Mrs.
s Pinkham’s Vegetable Com-
pound and kind advice, I
m, am today a well wo¬
man. I would say to all
suffering women, take

erings will vanish. ”

TyZ m lippe, of Ladoga, Ind.,
writes:
“Dear Mrs. Pink¬

I became so weak I
could not walk across
the room without help. After giving up all hopes of recovery,
I was advise ! to use Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Com¬
pound aud wrote for special information. I began to improve
from the first bottle, aud am now fully restored to health.”
