column*, “ews in Lavonia is
soars*, as is everything else that
we want. However, some thi*gs
are worthy of not*.
One of the biggest things in
town, and the thing of which her
people (the best part of them) are
justly prond, is the Lavonia High
School, ussier the management of
Prof. Fitzpatrick, bis most estima¬
ble wife, J/m. Fitzpatrick, Miss
Mattie Castlcn, a young lady of
most charming personalities, and
Mrs. Viola Knox in charge of
the musical department, who is so
well and favorably knonw in and
around Lavonia, that she needs
nothing more said in her- behalf
than the mere mention of her
name.
While the rumbling wheels of
time are moving onward, snd the
e 0 T)le of the town are passiag to
and fro and heeding it not, tins
little band of teachers is doing
mor8 for Lavonia and the flection
surrounding her than anything
else in her midst. They are doing
a work that will some day develop
in the production of noble men and
women, whose hands may some
day guide the helm of empire and
the chip of state. They do their
work well, and they deserve the
beauty sug^ ort;life encouragement
and the applause of every citizen
of Lavonia. Do they get it? Yes,
they are entrreeiastically supported
by every patriotic, up-to-date, en¬
lightened man of tht town, if there
arc any others, perhaps they do
not patronize the school because
perhaps they know nothing them¬
selves asd prefer teat their chil¬
dren “follow in thsar footstep*.”
But the biggest thing in Livo¬
nia is h*r conceptions of her own
lordly self, her fst-are prospects,
her present importance and tier
hopes and aspirations of the fu
ture. And to rj&j the least of it,
her prospects are “looking up¬
ward;” quite a number of excel¬
lent people have, within the last
y#ar, cast their lots in Lavontt,
while a still greater boon to her i*-
the fact that some not so “extreme¬
ly excellent” have departed hence
to parts unknown, and it is the
sincere wish of “some at least”
that their whereabouts may always
remain unknown, even in the
“misty Levond” we hope never to
be so unfortunate as to rua ucpn
them wandering upon the thorny
bank* of the river Styx, waiting
for Charon to transport them over
its black and poisonous waters.
It seems that all the news in
Lavonia is old by now. All the
marriages that will »ccur soon
I suppose have “done occurred,”
all the young babieain town have
got teeth and can walk (and cry)
and of course is no news to any¬
body now.
Thor* have transpired, some
scenes behind the curtain that
might interest some, but owing
to circumstances we can’t “raise
them” because we can’t run fast.
If the parties who played the
leading role in the “farce comedy”
will come up and ask us in tne
right way not to “mention it,” we
won’t, but otherwise we may run
the risk in our next ’’annual” com¬
munication.
Mr. Ballard has recently moved

ing Dr. J M. Freeman’s homo,

The friends of It. C. Allen are
urging him to run for clerk of
court next race. He now has the
matter under dcNsideration, and if
he decides to ran be will make it
hot for come body. Wo believe al¬
so that Lavonia ought to furnish
the senator for the next political
offering. Other sections of the
county have been imposed upon is
this way long enough, and we think
Lavonia should be willing to bear
the burden one time. We also
have stone first class legislature
timber, or at least we have a right,
to presume them to he first class,
(as they are good for nothing else)
and if it will be any accommoda¬
tion to the county, ire can trot
him oat aad guarantee ban a ma¬
jority in his home district. It is
time something is being done, for
the last legislature passed one law
and it has since bean proclaimed
unconstitutional. That’s the ‘-Dog
Law.” Go it’s a Dog Gone Law.
The town treasury has rc «ntly
been replenished to the amount of
about $75. $57,50 of which vrae
the town’s winnings in one game
of skin and seven up, The balance
was contributed by some sporting
gentlemen who undertook to pull
off a b oxing con test at the S|x>ri -

feared with by the timely arrival
