Settling, On A Candidate.
The New \ ora Herald has been
asking D.nuo,ratio roprosentativid;
and senators \vh >ui they favor for
President. Naturally only a few
of them are prepared to state
their preference at present. Eveu
ii they have a pretorence they do
not care to state it, preferring to
wait and see what the sentiment
of the rank and liie of the party
in their respective states is. •
Those who have the good of the
party at heart want to see a ticket
and a platform that will command
the support of the entire organize
tion. It is clear that no one who
was conspicuously identified with
Mr. Bryan in trio campaign.-, ot
1896 and i900, or who was bitter¬
ly opposed to him in those cam¬
paigns, is likely to get the nomina¬
tion. The fact that Mr. Bryan
has refused to be present at the
harmony bauiuet that the
Club of Chicago proposes to give,
because Mr Cleveland is to
invited, lias no doubt been widely
noticed and its significance com¬
mented upon. Mr. Bryan practi¬
cally said that he and his
would not give their support
any one who tvas conspicuously
act've in opposing him when
was the party’s standard bearer.
If harmony is to be
there! ore, and harmony is necessa¬
ry to success, a man must be nom¬
inated who was not conspicuous in
the Bryan campaigns. There is
undoubtedly a growing belief that
Judge Parker of New i ork stands
an excellent chance of being
chosen to lead the Democracy. In
a brief talk the other day Presi¬
dent. Rooseyelt said that he. Boose
velt, would be the Republican
nominee for President and that
Judge Parker would bo the Dem-
ocratic nominee—-that the norm
nees of the two great parties would
be from t ie same state. No doubt
the President has canvassed
situation pretty thoroughly though
't, is far from certain that his pre¬
diction will prove to be correct.
Tiie Herald made inquiries 01
seventy-four Democratic represen
i
tatives and fifteen Democratic
senators. Of the representatives
interviewed, fortvjthree refused to
express a choice. Of the other
thirty one, however, twenty-three
exoressed a preference lor Judge
Parker. Of fifteen senators,
twelve declined tq state their
preference and three said they fa"
vored J udgo Parker.
Other candidates hail friends
among those interviewed, but
Judge Parker was Jar m the lead
Manv things may occur, however,
between now and the time for the
meeting of the nominating con¬
vention to change the 1 eminieot
of the party respecting the prop¬
er man for its star.ilird hearer,
but at present Judge Parker
appears to be the favorite--Ex.
