The County Tyeaurer’s
Office Unnessary.
It was intimate the other day
that the County Commissioners
would have some difficulty this
year in making the county’s in¬
come meet the imperative de
mands upon it, and that there
was a possibity that there would
have to be an increase in the tax
rate. The rate is as high now
as the people are will¬
ing to stand, and a higher rate
would have a tendency to keeping
away horaeseekers and investors.
But there is a wav of increasing
the county’s income a few thous¬
and dollars without increaing the
burden of trie taxpayers, We re¬
fer to the needless offices, jfeany
times we have urged the Legisla¬
ture to abolish the office of
County Treasurer, but we do not
recall that trie County (Jommis
sioners have takeh an aggressive
stand in behalf of this reform. If
they were to put their shoulders
to the wheel, as it were, they
might be able to get the Legisla¬
ture to pass a bill abolishing the
office. There is a widespread sen
Ument of doing away with this
office in all the counties and it on
ly needs a little wisely directed
effort to get the Legilatures to
act in the matter.
When the office of County
Treeasururer was established
there was a need for it. Now
there is none. In each of the
counties, except two, there is now
a bank, The banks are in every
respect capable of performing the
duties of County Treaurer, and
they would not onlv perform
them without compensation, but
would gladly pay interest on
county funds deposited with
them.
In this county, for instance, the
Board of Education has to bor¬
row money with which to pay
the schooi teachers. If a bank
were the treasurer on the countv
the interest it would grealv ex-
j cee( j the amount the Board of Ed
ucation has to pav for its loans.
It is a sate statement that in this
county the saving that would be
effected bv abolishing -the office
would be $5,000 or $6,000 a .ear.
