Praises
Puaises is never wholly
served.
Risk it.
Don’t be afraid. No bones were
ever broken by appreciative re¬
marks.
Go ahead, Say it. You can
hardly come in contact with any¬
body without noting some com¬
mendable thing. Speak of it.
And if any criticism anv salt or
sour word comes up in your throat
swallow it back.
What a vast, kindly benevolent
bottomless pit is the pit of the un¬
said! It is the Gehenna valley of
our lives, where lie the burnt re
fuse of our unkindesses.
You are full of thoughts and
gentle words.only vou do not real¬
ize how full until >ou begin to
speak.
Unstop your generous impulses
Turn on the fountain of your
praises.
For this world of human hearts
is dry and dusty. Most men and
women go out smitten with a cruel
thirst. The sons and daughters of
men perish for appreciation.
Then water them. Sprinkle
them with gentle rain of vour
cheering words. Drop the dew
of your admit ing g’ances and
warm smiles, upon the just and
upon the unjust, with heaven’s in¬
discrimination.
Contwist you, smile.
We Americans are an odd lot
We are soft as wax in our hearts,
fu 1 of generous feeling, hungry
to he ! p (he next man. But we
hate to admit it
I have walked the street, in Ion e
]y moods, and searched the face
of everv passer-bv for a human
looh. But it was dreary picking
Men glanced at me and looked
quickland away, Women never
looked at all. Only a woman or
two of Mrs. Warren’s profession.
And I have wondered iFTt is not
sheer loneliness, mere desire to s^e
a lightened face, even if it must
be bought, and not a taste for vice
that leads men to take up with
crepuscular creatures.
For souls are purchased with
kindness Every cordial gesture
vou make to a man gives you a
property right to a portion of his
soul.
Mine are the people I have lov¬
ed, if only for a moment. They
constitute mv estate I own them
I do not own my own purse.
«T\vas mine, tis his, and has
been slave to thousand.” I do
not own my house, the contents
of my strong box, mv furniture
and pictures, no, nor the children
I have begotten, save in so far as
I love them.
There is but one right and title
in the court of souls It is love.
It is appreciation. Anything or
anybody in this world belongs to
the one who appreciates it, or him
pr her. No claim will stand in
|he great assizes.
And I do not own those who
appreciate me; they own me. It

No Fair In
This Year
On account of unforseen obstac¬
les it has been decided to hold
Fair at Lavonia this fail. This bit
of news is very painful for this pa
per to publish but in answer to the
many inquiries ns to the outcome
of the fair it has been definitely de
cided that the fair could not be
held at Lavonia this fall. One ob
stacle was the date agreed on
which conflicted with the date of
the Southeastern Fair to be held
in Atlanta. Another difficulty was
in arranging for the amusements,
and still anothtr difficulty was in
getting the fair managed.
It is regretted very much tli.it
the Fair could not be held this fall
The project was done in good
faith and it was thought then that
the fair would held, Unforseen
difficulties arose which made it
next to impossible to hold the fair
this fall.— La von la "limes

Tin Cheaper than
Paper
Boiton Sept. 15—While news¬
paper publishers ha/ e been ne
wailing the high and ever increas
ing cost of white paper, the bakers
of the city have not been sitting
idly by. On the contrary, they
have just announced that hereafter
no more paper plates will be dis¬
tributed with pies or pies with
plates.
“It’s the war,” the baker ex-
plains, and its effect upon the ever
increasing cost of paper.
From now on its the tin plate
