Here are onr iHilitics in • nut-aheU:
1st. Universal and mi tram inch-d free¬
dom to every loyal mu of our Republic.
2nd. Universal and untramnudcil pro
toction to every Aniericnu citifcn in the
enjoyment of all the rights, priviligca,
aud iiumuuitics tlmt belong to an
American freeman.
3rd. Uni venal and proper development
of all the natural resources of our coun¬
try-beginning with t he proper develop¬
ment of the mind, upon which depends
the proper development of every other
natural resource of onr country. Then
we climax our iioliticw by wiving, that
it is proper developed intelligence and
virtue that oountitute the only effectual
safeguard, permanent prosperity, and
enduring happiness of nations.
BURIED ALIVE.
Neither the frequent perils nor the
continual diacomtort of men who
work underground can ever be ap¬
preciated by us wlio live every day
in the sunshine. A Pennsylvania let
ter to the New York Times describes
an awful experience of one Frager, a
Scranton collier, who was caught by
a falling mass ot coal, and lay in his
living tomb for nearly sixteen hours.
Frager was horrified to find him
Bell shut in by the great black mass.
A# the “squeeze” continued, his
prison grew Finaller, and from the
continual ominmiB cracking of the
coal o»erheud be expected every
moment to be crushed to dearth.
Hy great fortune two drills lay
within his reach, lie seized them
seized them and managed to fix
them crosswise in the corner of the
chamber directly above him. They
helped to support the Buperincum
bent mass, anddid their work" well,
although Frager half expected them
to break under the tremendous
All about him, meantime, the
great boulders of coal kept pressing
closer and closer, Doth hia leet
were caugkt, and us the slow and
fearful hours went by he felt hie
limbs growing numb as the circula¬
tion of the blood ceased.
Little by little he had been crowd¬
ed into a half-sitting posture, and as
the sharp edges and comers of the
cial drove deeper and deeper into
his flesh he felt as if ho were resting
on spikes. In this terrible condi¬
tion he remained, with only the
faintest hope of rescue.
The crash that buried Frager alive
in this way cut off all communica¬
tion between him and his assistant,
Anthony Lavin. Laviu was on the
outside of the “fall” aud ran imme¬
diately for help. A gang of twelve
men hastened to the place and ut
once began cutting through the
thick wall that separated them from
the »oor man’s narrow prison.
The chance of his being found
alive grew all the time less and less,
but the brave fellows kept at theii
work without flinching, though their
own lives were every moment in
danger.
As they made their way through
the wall it became necessary to
proceed with greater aud greater
caution, precious as the moments
were, Jlest they should unwittingly
start a boulder that would crush
Frager in its fall.
At last, however, the wall w«8
pierced, and the buried man, still
alive and able to speak, though ter
ribly wilh bruised, and nearly suffocated
fuel gases and coal dust, w..s
taken out and hastily removed to the
mouth of the mine. •
Krager’u Hough men wept for joy, and
wile and children, who hud
been in the agony of suspense foi
almost a night aud a day, were fairly
besides themselves as they clung
about him.— _ Youth's Companion.
