A Silken Curiosity.
On Christmas day we were treated
to the scene of some old time industry,
the like of which is rarely seen now.
it * as a silk dress, worn by Mrs,
Polly Bowers, widow and fifth wife.
of the late Job Bowers. Fhe inform¬
ed us tliat the dress was made in
1840, and that it was all worked at
home, from the gathering of the Mul¬
berry leaves from which the silk was
produced, to the completion of. the
garment. The thread was webbed by
worms raised at home, and woven on
an old Georgia loom, the largest in
the section. To complete it all, it
required several months. There must
be some ancient pride in wearing
such a souvenir as that on a Christ¬
mas day, and it naturally excites
pleasant admiration, it shows wdiat
busy hands conib do in the days long
gone by.—American Union.

A Bit of Pathos at Christinas Tide.
There is a little girl of six years of
age, belonging to a family on .Sixth
street, who has proved herself one of
the ministering children not in name
only. A few weeks ago the baby of
this family died. The children, as
well as the mother, had looked for¬
ward to hanging up the baby’s deal stock¬
ing at Christmas with a great of
pleasure. But the loss of the baby
brought such anguish to the mother
that she decided to have no Christ¬
inas celebration of any kind.
Last Sunday evening, as the family
sat in partial darkness, recounting
their loss with all its sad circumstan¬
ces, a tender little voice pierced the
gloom: Christ¬
“Mamma, isn’t there any
mas in heaven?”
“Yes, darling,”pnswered Christmas the weep¬
ing mother, “ it is always
there.”
“Then why dorit you keep it here?”
persisted the little girl. Jus’ make
b’lieve baby isn’t uoad, an’ bang uj)
her little stockin’, mamma, an’ h-s all
have. Cimsmas jus’ the same, ail’ he
liapjiy, like she is.”
The child’s wisdom prevailed
against the unreasoning sorrow of
the mother, and the little ones are
happy and busy filling the stocking
of the baby who will keej> Christinas
iu heaven.—Detroit Free Press.
