Boli’liyiOTeclsU■ ALPH0NS0 XIII. Tho Daily Life of the Child King of Spain Described. Generous by Nature, and Pos¬ sessed of a Hearty Appetite. The little King of Spain, Alphonse XIII., according to a recent letter from St. Sebastian, grows in beauty ancl intelligence every day. lie 1ms been (juick to put oil' tho habits of an infant and don instead those of matur¬ ing childhood. Alphonso sets a good example to his subjects, elnldi-h and otherwise, by rising at 7 o'clock in the morning, lie at once lakes a bath under the superintendence of bis nurse, to whom he is so devoted that it lias been deemed wise to retain her in the household. At 7.30, his toilet Lei eg made, he goes out for an airing in tho Ayete Park, and it is there, with the fresh breezes of the morning as an appetiz¬ er, that lie takes his breakfast—a simple clip of chocolate and a biroclie. From that time until midday he re¬ mains in Hie park, running about, making mud pies and indulging in other engrossing sports of early child¬ hood, while the warm Spanish sun is tinting iiis pale little face with faint roses and bronze. When the midday angelus sounds from tho church towers of ;St. Sebastian, it is also the signal for I lie midday meal or meat breakfast taken i > lieu of luncheon in many of the UontinenUi! countries. This repast is quite imposing for tho little King, for it is enjoyed in the company of his mother and his two sisters, while all Hie rigors of tho Spanish court etiquette are observed. Breakfast over, all Spain takes a siesta and the little King's head nods with the rest of his sleepy subjects. Ilis nurse takes him in her arms and sings him to sleep with the wild, sweet strains of the gypsy lullabies crooned in the mountain fastnesses of Central Spain. At 4 o’clock King Alphonso is awake again. lt is time for the state promenade. Madam Tucon, the Court governess, and General Cordor- ba, military chief of the King’s house¬ hold, accompany him in this function. The little King has au intense childish admitntion for the brass buttons, the sword and tho splendid uniform of the General, and in order to please him he lias been made u like outfit in which he tnkes great pleasure. tie loves to hold the massive cane which the General always carries, and march soldier fashion, with mimic strides, in front of his suite. The walk is always on some high¬ way, and the populace come in crowds to cheer and greet the baby king. lie receives their salutations with great gravity and never fails to respond. Generous by nature, lie tills his little pockets with small coins, bright and fresh from tho mint, stamped in his likeness. These lie distributes right and loft to tho numerous beggary that crowd tho way, calling, as lie showers on them tho royal bounty, “Tonial” (take!). Somotimes the expedition is taken in a carriage, but every d .y this airing forms a part of tho routine of the King's life. At fi lie returns to the palace, where his mother is in waiting for him. The King lias a most remarkable ap¬ petite, and the regular life with its many hours of outdoor exercise lias increased Ibis faculty. Ho eats all and as much as he wants. One day his governess told hint that he should not eat of a certain dish because it was bad for him. “Then why did you put it beforo me?” was the poser pro¬ pounded by the little kingly gour¬ mand. Ilis tastes run to all sorts of queer food, and among other tilings lie lias a strange fancy for sau¬ sage, which he eats in large quantities. Jtis mind is untutored--lio does not know his letters and all mental educa¬ tion is forbidden. Ilis mother is de¬ termined Miat Ids body alone shall he trained, at least for the present. “He is to be undo a man;” those are tho Queen’s orders. IBs severe illness of last year lias made Queen Christine extremely cautious. Ilis mind must not he fatigued. Fresh air, exercise, baths and (lie utmost freedom are the liases of his regimen, which seems to have brought life back into the feeble frame of the puny King. Alphonso, however, is extremely precocious, and Ids intelligence and comprehension are wonderful in a child of ids years. At 3 precisely ho retires. He em¬ braces Ids mother, ami with a quaint little “Good night, gentlemen,” to the members of Ids suite, lie is Jed away to his royal cr.'b by the Countess de Peralta, tho official nurse. She undress¬ es iiim and listens to Ids infant prattle while he tells her of the many experi¬ ences of the day. Then Ids real nurse, who sleeps always by Ids bedside, takes him in her arms. The palace is silent, and her thin, quavering voice pan be heard singing in queer minor ladeneo a Spanish lullaby. Thus iho King of Spain falls into slumber, and as bis sleep-song ceases, Ilis Majesty’s sentinels pace with heavy steps outside tho walls of the palace, and during the long watches of the night rep eat the hours with a deep- toned “AlertU”—“guards, be careful” —as they meet each other iu * .their rounds..—[Paris Figaro. The stream of lava flowing down tho southeastern side of Vesuvius ad¬ vances slowly and majestically, and is said to ho a splendid spectacle from the observatory at Pompeii. A case of extraordinary longevity is reported by a Monastic newspaper. In a village ncav Elbassan lives a man named Ismail who is said to bo one hundred and forty years old. The war ship that was carried eight miles inland by a tidal wave and end¬ ed her days by being used as a hotel, was the Wateroe. The accident hap¬ pened to her in the harbor of Arica, Peru, in 18C8. Trade marks were known jn ancient Babylon ; China had them as early as 1000 R. C.; they were authorized in England in 1300; Guttenburg, tho in¬ ventor, is said to have had a lawsuit over liis trade mark, A rare and curious animal—a lizard known .to science as Phrynosome plan- iceps—has been received in Paris from South America. It is completely Cov¬ ered with wart-like points, and when frightened it flattens itself out on tho ground, bristling with points. The Baltimore American relates that a couple from Pocahontas, AV. A r a., who went to Cumberland, Md., to get married, were delayed thirty-six hours in having tho ceremony performed, because the groom was not old enough by that number of hours to got a li¬ cense. Tho Penobscot River, the largest in Maine, drains 7400 square miles, a re- gion as largo as the State of Massachu¬ setts. From Old Town to Bangor, a distance of twelve miles, the river falls more than ninety feet, giving several of the finest water powers in the world. A German, of Boston, well known t.t the .Spilth End, recently took a trip to tho fatherland. T.ere he died. AVhile living he turned the scale at 300 pounds. Ilis body was cremated and the remains, weighing six ounces, inclosed in an envelope and sent to his family in Boston bv mail. Hnw Bail is Formed. A correspondent of Nature contrib¬ utes to Unit journal a theory of the formation of hail, which is so short and clear that it will interest many readers, who liavo, at times, opportu- ni y to test its correctness. Limiting our notice to such compound hailstones ns are the most destructive, and are produced during a tornado or a violent thunderstorm, tho following is in few words, i lie theory of the formation: AA hen the winds gym to rapidly round nr. axis, more or less inclined to the earth, the space at and about the axis is raritied. When tho air charged with vapor is drawn into this raritied s, ace, it may be condensed into cloud or rain, but at a greater elevation into snow. Now, supposing the rain formed in the lower region to be drawn up by Hie ascending current into tho snowy region, and so held for a short space, the drops will he frozen, and then, if propelled beyond tho gyrations, it will fall to the ground as a shower of or¬ dinary hail. But if in tho descent they are again drawn in by the inflow¬ ing current they will be again carried up into the cold region, and so acquire another coating of snow, or, if wetted «i the previous descent, the water will fi-tcz.c into a coat of transparent ice. I it t his way the globule may make a number of ascents and descents, and acquire a fresh coating each time. Why He Broke Down.
