Farming at a Loss.
Below we reproduce 1 a letter from
Hubbard, Price A Co. bearing , * upon r
the present 1 method of farming ° in . the
cotton statin.
Nxw Yi.uk, April 1 ^ 27, 1891.
bearing upon the question of the
age of tlu nca, < 1 •>!> “I cotton,^ «<
beg to quote from a letter received
to-day from a valued correspondent
in Louisiana:
“Tim low price of cotton has ca-t
a gloom of d«-«p:iir over our planter-
and farmers, and the topic of con-
▼ersation i-, can we raise it, with
present price of meal, bacon, and for¬
age for our working stock? All an¬
swer in the negative. F.lautcrs and
farmers are paying special attention
to their grain, and, in my
will not plant as much cotton l»y ten
per ceut. as lust season. Allow me
to illustrate in figures the basis upon
which we operate:
Feed for one mule.................... 8 70.00
Two laborers to mule—meal,
*25; bacon, 400 lbs. at 8c.,
tC52............ ......... 57.00
Their non-producing work families,
too small to —for ba¬
con and meal.................... 57.00
Necessary clothing for two
families.................................... .
Medical attention for two
families...................................... 10.00
Total. 8294.00
••The number of bales for one
eight, at 840 per bale.....8320/10.
“The planter get s one-half to keep
up his end of the row, meuuing
of the eight hales, or 8160.
“Now, gentlemen, the above fig-
ures show the absolute necessity
raising corn and bacon at home,
which is impracticable with
plantcrs; but. let me say right
that small farmers will not
to make much cotton with the
prices that prevail and *1 ill
staring them in the face. None
uiy sort and ‘niggers' can meet
above figures, and we attempt it
cause we have neither, capacity
ability for anytJiing else. My
crop is very fine, costing the
sum of t» cents a bushel to gel
ready for the cradle on May 15,
they hate cost me iu car lots 75
per bushel delivered. It is
cheaper to raise them than to
from the depot.”
Faithfully yours.
HinBAun, Prick A. Co.
The Southern Alliance
says there is no over production
cotton that causes the low price,
that it is a deep-laid conspiracy
rob the farmer. Such matter is
fair sample of that organ's
ness. The people need
truths, but the Southern
Farmer gives them demagogic
hoods.
