ESCAPE AND CAPTURE.
WOODEN KEYS AGAIN GET IN
THXIR WORK.
Dr. Glover and Bunk Reeder Make
Their Escape From the Carnes-
ville Jail—Glover Captured.
Last Sunday while the moat of the
citizcnsof Carnesville—together with
Jailor J, H. Hathcock— were attend- i
ing services at Cross Roads church, |

murder of his wife by poisoning, and j
Rank Reeder, a negro charged with
stealing, made their escape from the i
Carnesville jail.
As soon as church service* were
over, the news of the escape was fly¬
ing in every direction, and Sheriff
McCarter, together w ith ex-Sheriff
McConnell, Jailor Hathcock, and oth¬
ers started in pursuit of the fugitives.
It was soon ascertained that the cul¬
prits were making their way to
South Carolina, and pursuit was com¬
bined in that direction.
The officers found Glover and the
negro had eaten dinner at a negro's
house, and Glover shaved. The next
heard from Glover was Monday I
night, when the pursuers found that
he had gotten something to eat that
day at Sam Weldon’s, in Hart coun¬
ty. The officers knew that their pur¬
suit was close and accurate, and hav¬
ing already sent forward men to the
ferries and bridges along the Tugalo
river, they felt confident that the re¬
capture was theirs.
Tuesday morning the search was
begun with increased forces. Later
in the day it w as learned that Glover
had eaten breakfast at Weldon’s, the 1
s«tne place w here he had eat the day
before. This thoroughly aroused and
enthused every man in the chase, and
they vrero now certain that Glover’s
wa0< len key had given him liberty
only for a short time.
Wednesday morning every house
and scope of wood* iu that section
wa» searched, but to no avail. The
day was nearly gone, and the posse
of men were about to disperse and
go home, when Mr. P. W. Brooks
and others from Lavonia appeared
on the grounds with fresh evidence
that confirmed what was already be¬
lieved by many of the party—and
that Glover was concealed
on Weldon’s premises, and that. a
proper search would prove it. Some
of the party, however, doubted this,
ag Sheriff McCarter had made what
IZne.

make another search, which he did,
and was up in the loft but a moment
when he returned with Dr. Glover
by his aide. The quietness and
promptness with vrfiich Sheriff Leard
j brought Glover.down made the crowd
! suspicious that be knew before where
j Glover was, which suspicion was
j |0#n con g rme d. The faots are that
Weldon sold out Glover to Sheriff
Leard, thinking ho was compromis¬
ing some chargee the Hart courtly
authorities had against him aud his
family. Sheriff Leard was working
for the reward, but said later he
would not accept it under the cir-
j cumatanocs. Sheriff McCarter had
aoarched the loft twice before, but

dark quilts thrown over him, and

A Sober Town.
Joe Scott In*** the following in the
last issue of the Hartwell Sun:
I came to Carnesville afoul the
11th <*f last November and have been
ot work here the greater part of the
time since then. I haven’t seen but
tao or three drunk men sineo I came
here. I have seen only one small
bottle of liquor. I took one small
drink of that the 1.1th of November.

tight or disturbance hero in six
months, I haven’t heard of it. We
have * nice, intelligent Mayor and
Councilmen, but they have but little
chance to display their legal or judi¬
cial abilities. I have asked who was
Marshal of this town and was told
that there was none—didn’t have any
use for one, as there were no arrests
to make. I learu there has been one
elected or appointed a few days ago,
but I don’t know what will be his
duties or where he will get his pay;
there is no town tax nor any tines
to collect. I think I can safely say
that Carnesville is aot only a sober
tow n but is also a model one. There
are three churches iu town and an-
other in the suburbs, just a nice walk

The crops in this county are look¬
ing finely. Judge Tribble lias some
wheat knee high and corn with five
and six blades. I never saw the
farmers work so hard as they aie
doing now; they are not waiting for
something to “turn up” hut are turn¬
ing something up for themselv es, and
that from “early morn till dewy eve,”
and from dewy eve till early morn,
for aught I know. May their pros¬

alized.
