HO® FROM THE FIELD.
The County Lecturer On the Wing-
Report of the Crops.
On tbe 21st instant, with grip sack
jn hand, we left C’arnesville bound
for the camp ground. The apjiear-
ance of rain and the near approach
of night made us seek shelter, and
we called in at the house of Mr. E.
C. Vandiver, where we spent a pleas¬
ant night with him and his family.
Brother V. is the very embodiment
of cleverness, and the sociableuess of
bis better three-fourths and lovely
daughters, together with the boys,
was a perfect balm to the waary-worn
traveller. 1 bother Vandiver is a full-
blooded allianceman, a yard wide, and
lias placed himself squarely on the
Ocala platform.
The next day found us at Allen's,
surrounded with both alliancemen
and non-alliancemen to hear the ad¬
dress of the county lecturer. Prof.
Deavors, principal of the school at
that place, is doing a good work.
The Professor was placed in the
chair, and introduced the speaker in
bis usual pleasant manner. From
this place wo were conducted to the
home of Brother Hall, where we
spent a pleasant night with him and
Jiis good wife, seven boys and two
daughters. One only has to go to
Brother Hall’s to find that lie is one
of the leading lights of the hospitality
of our county. Ilis daughter is a
fair tyf>c of true womanhood, pos¬
sessed with that refinement so bene-
fitting to her sex.
Next day we mot a respectable
congregation at Dogwood. Here arc
found a prosperous school, conducted
by Prof. Greene, of Aiken, S. C., and
lately of the Hiawassee High School.
Brother AV. .A.’Landrum took charge
of us and conducted us to Brother
English’s, near New Hope, where we
were to lecture the 24th. Bro. En¬
glish was quite sick. Quite an inter¬
esting time was had at this place.
Leaving New Hope in company
with Brother Scott we travelled three
miles, where we stopped for dinner,
and as his son had come over from
Tugalo with some fine fish we fared
sumptuously. He called them reg¬
ular alliance fish, which caused us to
relish them all the better.
The 25tli found us at home with
our own alliance brethren, where we
could recount to them the alliance
outlook. The outlook is very en¬
couraging for the alliance. So far
as we have travelled the order is fast
gaining ground.
The crop prospect is very flatter¬
ing. Corn is very good, and there is
a larger acreage planted than in past
years. Cotton is late and cannot
make an average yield. AY e find
the people very determined to change
the current, buy less and make more
of the necessaries at home.
The. people have received the news
of the change in the policy of the
Knte items e with enthusiasm. All
are anxious to aid in the upbuilding,
but the financial pressure they are
under is such they cannot command
the money, Could they succeed in
wading through the crisis and get a
fair price for their produce we be¬
speak a liberal support from the ] veo-
pie and a bright career for the Ex-
terrrise, making it worthy the name
it bears. Lectukkk.
Sullivan Hardware Company.
Parties wanting to buy machinery
any kind should write to the Sullivan
Hardware Company, Anderson, S.C.
and get their prices before placing
their orders. This firm makes a spe-
cialty of selling steam engines, eotton
gins, presses, saw mills, wagon scales,
shafting, pulleys, etc., and we un¬
dcrstaml that their prices are very
low. They are* general agents for
the Erie City Iron Works engines,
.Smith cotton gins, and DeLoach
saw mills, several of which have been
soln in this and adjoining counties
and are giving perfect satisfaction.
They also report large sales of the
Thomas Suction Cotton Elevator,
which unloads the cotton from wagon
to gin by suction and is now becom¬
ing so popular among all ginners.
They ask us to say if parties who are
needing machines of any kind will
write and state what is wanted they
will take pleasure in quoting rock
bottom prices. .
Street Working.
The streets are being Worked aud
put in excellent condition this week.
The heavy rains have washed aud
cut them up considerably, but a few
days work with a large force of hands
will make a great* change in their
appearance.

gave us a pleasant call Tuesday af¬
ternoon.
Mr. J. F. Tabor and family, of La-
vonia, passed through town Tuesday
on their way to Ft. Lamar to visit
relatives.
John Crump and M. D. Wheeler
have moved their saw mill out two
or three miles east of town on A. J.
Neal’s place.
The rains were very heavy last
Wednesday, and m the afternoon the
wind was very heavy, doing some
damage to the corn.
Rev. W. J. Purcell will he at Tu¬
galo church on the fifth Sunday in
August to preach the funeral of Mr.
Ilarbet and his wife.
Next AVednesday is tbe day the
big allicnce rally comes off at Toccoa.
A great many from this section will
go to hear the speaking.
Mrs. T. S. Reynolds and her
daughter, Miss Gertrude, of Atlanta,
are visiting relatives and friends at
this place ond at Iron Rock.
The following bill was passed last
Tuesday by Dr. Underwood: “For
the relief of Jesse 1). Strange, who
paid a bond and afterwards had the
man who skipped it arrested.”
We learn James D. Pulliam, of Sa¬
lubrity, will U'avel next year in the
interest of a prominet physician, and
carry as a side-line Swedish clover
for Judge McKenzie. Ilis success
is assured.'
M. I). Wheeler is now sowing lum¬
ber to build a new bridge across tbe
river at the Jackson mill place. Let
the good work go on until every
bridge in the county is made per¬
fectly safe.
Coining events cast their shadows
before them. New houses generally
House-keepers. Augustus N.
King, Esq., is building a handsome
on the hill north of the
square, near AY. F. McConnell's.
Air. J. M. C. Bagwell and three
children, of Atlanta, are visiting their
friends and relatives of this
county. Air. Bagwell was formerly
a citizen and merchant of this place,
and will receive a cordial welcome.
John Stowe, of Shelton county,
swallows frogs alive with much ease
and relish. He says people eat
much worse things every* day. He
will take a bet at any time, and is
said to be scooping in the dollars as
well as the frogs.
The Methodists are holding a very
interesting meeting thi: week, but
ow ing to the inclement weather the
congregation lias not been as large
as usual. Rev. T. O. Rorie, of Toc-
coa. has been assisting the pastor,
Rev. R. B. O. England.
A new firm, composed of Mr. L. J.
Green, of near this place, and Mr.
Lon Green, of Danielsville, will open
up a new stock of goods at this place
the early fall. They will occupy
the brick store north side of public
L. J. Green will conduct
the business.
it is with sadness we-chronicle the
death of Miss I’earl Crawford, daugh¬
ter of Mr. AVilkes Crawford, which
occurred on Tuesday last, with fever.
.She was about eleven years of age,
and was a very bright child, The
aud kindred have our sympa¬
in their bereavement.
The excessive rains of the present
week threaten to ruin the fine crops
of corn and cotton on the low lands
and water courses of this section.
If no disaster befall the corn crop of
Franklin county it is thought by
many farmers that there will be
enough raised for home consumption.
The speakers at the grand alliance
rally to be held at Harmony Grove
on August 21st will be Livinston,
Post, Watson, and Moses. They are
better acquainted with the political
aud financial condition of the country
than wc are, let us go and hear them;
we in ay learn something to our
vantage.

Commencs Now.
It is better to be a day too soon
than an hour too late. A small
guano factory in Carnesville is a ne¬
cessity. The people are determined
to raise cotton and the price is so low
that the seed, if properly manipu¬
lated, will be worth almost as much
as the lint. At present we do not
expect an oil mill, but we do expect
and shall be disappointed in the good
judgment of the farmers and business
men of this county if there is not a
cotton seed crusher put up, avid a
sufficient amount of fertilizers made
to supply at least a portion of the
county. You can make just as good
a fertilizer here in Carnesville as you
can buy elsewhere, and every ton
made here will save from five to ten
dollars in money, and days of hard
toil both to the farmer and his team
hauling from a distance over the
rough muddy roads. This is the
opening gun—the seige will go on
until victory is gained.
Alliance Rally at Spring Vale.
There will be an alliance rally at
Spring A'ale sub-alliance on Satur¬
day, August loth.
lion. E. 1'. Brown, of Athens, will
be there and give a public address at
2 o’clock, p. in. Other good speak¬
ers are expected.
Everybody is invited to attend and
bring with them well-filled baskets.
N. J. Holbbook, President.
G. L. Carson, Jn., Sec’y.
The Suspicious Package.
A young man bought a watermelon
in town last week, arid had it wrapped
up. On his appearance on the streets
a crowd of our citizens chased him
out of town before they caught him,
and imagine their chagrin when they
found only a ten-cent melon. They
thought it was a half dozen bottles
of beer. Considerably crestfallen
they* carne back and took cider.
The New Brick Store.
The new brick store of Mr. Walton
Gum, the west room of the, burnt
brick building, is rapidly going up.
The work commenced Monday morn¬
ing, and Will be ready for the wood
workmen iu a few days, if the weath-
is favorable. This will add much to
the appearance of lower street.

farmers many thousands. It will
save from five to ten dollars on every
ton used, and if the farmers would
spend that money with the mercliauts

It would make them (the merchants)

Think about it, talk about it, for

ous drain of money.
