A FAMILY FUSS.
BY t'XCI.K TOM.
(Continued from last week.)
“Well, Sam, you have dazzled me
in your talk, and I have never thought
of it just in this light, hut you know
in all families there is a pet, and as
you had always gone 011 uncomplain¬
ingly, and Tom would come and
throw himself upon the resources at
my command, I have rather idolized
him, hut just how to get out of this
it one of the perplexing questions
that comes uji before me. 1 think,
however, the better plan for you,
Sam, is to be quiet and don’t say but
little. Go on as you have been go¬
ing, and time will bring all things
right.”
“Dad, this question may be puz¬
zling to you, as you are a party with
Torn, but it is of easy solution to me.
Just simjtly enforce the constitution
and laws governing the family. If
there is any law not in accord with
the constitution, you and mother get
together and organize yourselves into
a supreme court and have a hearing
upon it and declare it to be uncon¬
stitutional, then and there decree as
a court that all laws not in accord
with the constitution arc null and
void, and that all laws pertaining to
the government of the family shall
be in accordance to the constitution
of said family, presuming the consti¬
tution to be of such that it grants
equal rights and privileges to all the
family alike.”
“Well, Sam, I see 3011 are not half
as big a fool as I thought 3-011 were,
if you have got hay seed in 3 our hair
and wear one gaHus. I will consider
this matter, and at a convenient time
1 will give you a hearing. As dav
has come, and we have lost sleep, we
will dismiss the matter for the jires-
cnt.”

Sullivan Hardware Company.
Parties wanting to buy machinery
any kind should write to the Sullivan
Hardware Company, Anderson, S.C.
and get their prices before placing
their orders. This firm makes a spe-
cialty of selling steam engines, cotton
gins, presses, saw mills, wagon scales,
shafting, pulleys, etc., and we un¬
derstand that their prices are very
low. They are general agents for
the Erie C"it 3 ' Iron Works engines,
Smith cotton gins, and DoLoach
saw mills, several of which have been
sol 11 in this and adjoining counties
and are giving perfect satisfaction.
They- also rejKirt large sales of tho
Thomas Suction Cotton Elevator,
which unloads the cotton from wagon
to gin 113 - suction and is now becom¬
ing so popular among all ginners.
They ask ns to sax- if parties who are
needing machines of any kind will
write and state what is wanted they
will take pleasure in quoting rock
bottom prices.
I)o x-ou need anx- job work done ?
If so, get our prices before placing
your orders. We do as neat work
as can be done elsexvhere, and at
prices that are astonishingly low.

gin with a rush this week.

in our eyes.
Dr. .T. R. Tucker is having a hand¬
some veranda built in front of his
residence, extending the length of
the building.
The cool days are coming ’round,
and the local asking for wood on
subscription is now standing in the
country office.
“The sound of the saw is heard in
the land,” wrote the country editor,
as the foreman commenced to “make
up” the plate-matter form.
Mr. X. A. Fricks, of Martin, was
in town this week. Mr. Fricks will
teach school at Allens next term,
commencing 011 November 30th.
The grade of cotton now being

Don’t squeeze that dollar so tight,
hut invest it in a new boarding house.
You need not build a fine one with
costh' trimmings and banjo work on
it, but a good substantial one.
Mr. L. F. Lenhardt has bought D.
U. Carson’s stock of goods at Har-

To the ladies of Franklin and ad¬

week trying to rent a house. He
wants to send his children to school,
and take boarders. Several from

Misses Nettie and I.illie Davidson,
daughters of J. J. Davidson, arc mak¬

A RED LETTER DAY
FOE CARNESVILLE AND FKANE-
LIN COUNTY.
Our High School Makes a Grand
Start—Large Crowd Present
To Hear tho Lecture.
Prof. Howell B. Parker gave us a
lang talk, a good talk, a sensible and
business-like talk last -Monday morn¬
ing.
Our prospects are flattering, our
hopes are bouyant.
\Ye started in to have the best
school that has ever been in this part
of Georgia, and we mean to have it.
We have the teachers, and we will
give them the students.
Eighty-two pupils were enrolled
the opening day.
We must have one hundred and
fifty before the holidays.
The school house is large and com¬
fortable. Two good fire places, two
good stoves already up, and another
one to put up.
F verytliing will be comfortable and
convenient.
Money was secured Monday to
buy patent desks, and the house will
be furnished with the latest improved
desks as soon as they can be shipped
here.
Farmers, bring on your children
just as soon as 3-011 can spare them
from the cotton field, the school fund
will be large, and you can afford to
school your children now. You must
afford it.
We hope the 3 ’oung teachers
throughout the county will take ad¬
vantage of Prof. Parker’s advanced
methods of teaching In- attending the
Carnesville High © School.
A Singing Concert.
Prof. J. T. Camp, of Gillsville, the
blind musician, will give a musical
concert at the court house in Carnes-
ville on Tuesday night, November
3rd. Everybody who possibly can
should go out, as it will be a musical
treat.

Several gentlemen from the conn-
have been in town this week try¬
ing to rent a house, so they could
here and send their children to
But they couldn’t find the
houses. If the land owners here will
build houses, or are not able to
themselves, why not form a
stock compaiy and build a num¬
of small houses, or one or two
ones suitable for taking board¬
ers? Students are not coming here
to camp out, and good citizens will
not come here and live in tents just
to send their children to school, but
will go elsewhere. There are some
good lots in town, and if 3-011 want
3 0111 - school to grow, and have good
citizens move here, build houses to
accommodate them.
Ed. F. McGowan, of the Daniels-
ville Monitor, speaks of the trio on
This Kxtkkprise as all being “red
headed.” Now, Ed., please don’t.
Couldn’t 3 -ou make it a little milder
and more euphonious by saying
“crushed-strawberry blonde,” “sorrel
top,” or calling us “Red Cloud?”
Redheaded! Ugh! Our dear boy,
be more careful in future, or we will
send our fighting editor over to in¬
terview you with a hand-full of clubs,
(and he will score more than three
points.) Understand?
The watermelon season is over,
and our watermelon contest closes.
Mr. R. E. McWhorter brought us
the largest, which weighed forty-
seven pounds, and he gets six months
subscription to Thu Extekphisk.
Mr. Walter Davis brought us the
next largest, weighing thirty-nine
pounds, and gets The Exteupiuse
four months. The melons were very
tine, and the gentlemen have our
thanks for them.
A prominent lawyer of this place
