Fire! Fire!! Fire!!! the men yelled
and the women screamed last Thurs-
day morning and we ail ran up to
Loomis Little’s confectionary store
and found a small blaze on the roof,
caused by a defective stove fine.
The fire was soon extinguished, for
no small fire would be silly enough
to resist the combined efforts of the
women of C'arnesville. We are ready
to bet oar last nickel that tljere is
net a like number of females any¬
where that can beat the women and
girls of our town drawing and carry¬
ing water in time of fire. It is really
dangerous for men to stand around
idle for the ladies will just rn:i over

condition.

Uncle Frank Hubbard'
It has been our pleasure to know
Mr. Francis Hubbard from our earl¬
iest childhood to the present time.
There never lias been a moment of
that time that we were not fully sat¬
isfied that Uncle Frank was an lion-
est man and a pure Christian. If we
had no other proof, his daily walk in
life would constrain us to believe in
the reality of the Christian religion.
His life lias been spent in an humble
quiet sphere. By close economy and
unceasing toil he lias managed to I
make a living. If the laws of our,
MMW *> constructed ns
give equal rights to all, uncle Frank I
would now he surrounded by ail the
comforts and luxuries of life. Hard
labor has brought on affliction. Ilis
eyes arc growing dim. A few more
years and then Uncle Frank will
,‘cross over tho river and rest under
the shade of the trees” with ilis sain-
ted wife who has gone before, Ho
has a passport that will admit him to
that country where unjust laws are
not known and oppressive lawmakers
never come, Uncle Frank lost his
loving, faithful and Christian wife a
few months ago, and during her last
illness some one stole twenty of
Uncle Frank’s hard earned dollars.
There is a fearful judgement await-
g the dastardly miscreant who per¬
petrated this outrage. Uncle Frank
is a cash subsciber of the Lmtekpri.se
and we hope he may live long to
read it.

act ell the business, there were at
least fifty dollars per capita and the
people as in dividends were out of
debt, but Avarice was not content
although the negro had been set free
that they might better control labor
there was too much money and as j
the machinery liad been fitted up to

CONCLUSION.
The ushering in of I860 was a
year long to be remembered, the
page of financial depression begins
to gather thicker and men wandered
at the cause from 1866 to 1877, the
mist had accumulated and condensed
into a thick vapor and men who lsad
had employment was driven out and
went from place to place seeking
other employment that they might
eke out a:i honest living for them¬
selves and families, hut alas for our
country Aval ice had fastened her
clutches on both labor and capitol
and the dollar held the balance of
power over labor and as a result we
will here place tho figures to
for themselves, to 1866 there was
m circulation $1,0110,687,770 during
the period , , mini 18 OO to 18,,
was n*tiie-1 Lom tu'w a.r.oui,'. 1
68 ,,, tO leaving a balance of oh 00 ,-
OCO.OOO ill circulation with
failures amounting ... to t4> ci-tr.i ,OJ4 with a-
loss of SIS,180, over a
ion of men out of employment and
innumerable host of tramps and
wages cut down to starvation prices,
in the meanwhile trust comes and
combines were formed controling the
prices of labor and produce till men
are left without employment, going
about feeling their way in the
ness, many of them falling by the
wavside giving up in despair, others
who were stiring to mako an
living have been forced to resort to
ualawful deeds to obtain
to subsist on.
The prices of cotton and grain
has run down till today till ine:i can-
not meet their obligations, and the
tenant classes are driven to pay ex¬
orbitant rents. The land holders
many of them have been forced to
give mortgages on their farms and a
failure under the financial pressure
to redeem their land are being turn¬
ed out, his home sold under the sher¬
iff’s hammer for less than what the
improvements cost, Oh God reveil
