A CITIZEN OF CHAtVFOHDVIM.I'.,
TME mSCOVKRKR OF THE
Gl<EAT COMET.
It is due to Prof. C. T. Boggs to state,
that on Thursday the 23 June last he
reported to us that ho had. on Wednes
.lay morning, seen a very brilliant unmet
in the Northeast and asked me to publish
the same. Wo could not Ho so, because wo
i, had » .. “gone t to press.” It did not npi»ar
in our last issue, simply from forgetful
ness on our part.
We make this statement, that justice
may l*e done to one, who, we believe, is
the discoverer of the comet about which
so much, recently has been said.
WHO SAW IT HRSTl
The question of who discovered the
present comet lias become it most mo¬
mentous one. Over GOO poisons have
laid claim to the honor and the Warner
Prize of 8200, and all of I hem are w ithin
comparatively the same time. It is de¬
sirable that no injustice be done in this
matter, and to this end all parties who
saw the cornet during the week ending
June 2.1th, or previously, will please for¬
ward ihelr i laims without delay to Prof.
Ftvift, Director of the Warrior Observa¬
tory, ltocheftcr, N. Y. It is certain
the discovery was toad# by a private in¬
dividual, but who that individual is re
mains to he seen.
