have no charms for us. H e are like

of this worthy j>srsonagn was so great
that he shook the dust of the barbaric

The editorial laments the inhumanity
of tho city ordinance which requires

(.rand . . Jury . of Richmond county . .
the ,. opening . of ... the-Superior u Court ,, , . last
Monday. It is a bold and fearless ar¬
rangement of the stock gamblers and
moneyed rings of the country. As
mighk hare been expected it created
much comment.
Among those who deem themselves
the subjects of an attack criticism is
rife. Among the great mass of the
people it lias met with the warmest
commendation. It struck the keynote
of |>opular feeling. The issue it makes
will yet ring from the hustings in every
quarter of the land. It is a precursor
of a great strife which is to come,
Dr. Ieltoli in commenting upon the
letters of Judge Hook in these col
limns predicts it.
But, whatever may be its polit¬
ical aspect, the statute books siteak
plainly upon the subject. Judge
Snead did not go out of his way. The
wisdoln of our fore-fathers sought to
cope with the evil. Guided by a sound
public policy they laid down laws to
^repress it. Anil while these laws have
long been treated as a dead letter, it
was in the fulfillment of a plain legal
duty that Judge Snead dwelt upon
them in Ids charge. The time was op¬
portune. At no time perhaps has the
country suffered more from the evils of
speculation. The question arises, how
aru we to repress them V If not from
the bench and the jury box, where are
we to expect an effective remedy ?
We have no idea that this charge will
result in any decided action ; we would
be much surprised to see a successful
uruiinal prosecution spring from it.
However much we may commend the
, spirit of the charge or the justice of
the laws it seeks to expound, we can¬
not. lose sight of its practical bearing.
The class of men at whom it aims is
too large and too powerful in sueh a
community as Augusta, They forma
bulk of the influential citizens. They
make up the juries and give shape to
their action. Still this does not mi
del the of Judge Snead “v less

proper, or detract in the least from the
force of his remarks. We have always
looked upon him as a fearless and con
seieutious judge, and It a vo seen much
to confirm us in the belief. His action
