In his annual address to the Knighta
of Labor made before the general aoem
Uy ^ St Lou*, General Master Work
Powderly congratulated Us. jet*
a p (Jtl tb* pnoentcondition of tbe order,
reviewed its many periods of prosperity
depression, and said that, although
its existence the membership of
the order had ebbed and flowed, yet to
<j* y jt was on the increase, and all
through the exciting times incident to
the presidential election the order had
steadily grown in membership and in¬
fluence. At no time, however, had the
membership exceeded 000,900 in good
standing.
The highest figure was reached ..bout
the time ot the general assembly meet
bog in the autumn of 1880. (
Reviewing the labor movement Mr.
Powderly said that there are too thany
labor organizations struggling for su¬
premacy. Callings that up to a ahort-ttra*
ago were not known to the general pub¬
lic are now known under the name of
some national or international associa¬
tion. The tendency of the labor move¬
ment seemed to be to divide up, While
that of tbs opposing force—capital- -was
to consolidate, and thereby to gain
strength to combat the forces of indus¬
try, when, single landed, they were ar¬
rayed before thet% the
After speaking at length on rpea
tAon of ballot reform and on the initia¬
tive and referendum, agd urging *ihst
the general assembly take specific action
on both questions, Mr. Powderly pro
reeded to dwell In detail cm the nutter
of immigration. lie said that six year*
ago he had declared in favor of the re¬
striction of immigration, and although
bis views were not then received ^rith
favor by the order he had not changed
them, bnt, on the contrary, had made
them more rigid. He believed in the to¬
tal exclusion of all immigrants who are
not self sustaining on landing in this
country.
He believed in closer union with other
organizations for united political action,
and recommended that the next «mv ca¬
tion be held at the same place and time
as that of the Fanners’ Alliance.
The annual report of General Secre¬
tary Treasurer Hayes shows that at the
time of the last general assembly there
was a balance on hand of $8,208. The
receipts from all sources during ths
year amounted to $54,350 and the ex¬
penditures were $60,749, eo that $884 re¬
mained in the treasury at the elaee of
the fiscal year on Jnne 80.
The report of the general executive order
board refers to a suit which the
has been for some years defending in
the courts. It was brought by William
W hi tty, of Amsterdam, N. Y., to re¬
cover $817.18—the value of goods claimed
to have been furnished by him to strik¬
ers in 1880. Whttty obtained s verdi, *
bat tbe board appealed and onim'w
trial secured a nonsuit. Tbe board t e
dared that tbe suit was a part ot ion
•piracy by the enemies of the order to
injure it by crippling it financially, a id
vnggeete that, bod the amt gone agaii *;
the order, a number of similar claii is
would bare been made.
Tbe fatuous Rochester clothing bOy
oott ia made the subject of an extended
reference. It ia claimed that million* of
dollars of trade bad been taken from th#
clothing combine, and that the only
hope tbe manufacturers hare of averting
a crushing defeat is of getting the assist¬
ance of some so called labor organisa¬
tion which their money may be able to
secure. It ia urged that tbe incoming
general executive board be instructed j)
press the fight with the combine on t^e
same lines in tbe amnrance that a bril¬
liant and substantial victory will be won.
The case of the conviction of Master
Workman Hughes is commented npoa
In terms which reflect somewhat severe¬
ly upon the administration of justice ia
Rochester. There wae no trial, says tha
report. By an outrageous abase of the
power of the state the jury was
