DEMOCNATS DOING MOKE THa.n

More truth than poetry in the iollow

The work of the extra session shows a
most remarkable contrast between the
fears manifested by members of the popu¬
list parly last fall and democrats carry¬
ing out campaign pledges made to the
people.
When one stops to think of it the work
of reform that is being done is eminent¬
ly proper since it proves they are more
intent on keeping their promises than they
are upon parceling out the offices.
McKinleys cowardly make shift tariff

That Democrats have lost no time in
removing ttvs curse from the statute bonks
is gratifying to the whole country. Now
siuce the democratic party fought its bat¬
tles upou the ground ol tariff reform and
speedy relict, if they were victorious It is
perfecly natural that the tariff should
have taken precedence of all ether re¬
forms.
The poor man cannot say now that he
is being robbed by the tariff.
In the Democratic as iu all political
parties there are perhaps a lew members
who will think that it Is the duty of
the party when it comes into power to
first distribute the office* but honest peo¬
ple everv where know that there is a ma¬
jority just as auxious and sincere in ob¬
taining relief from an unjust tariff.
Au apology tor the parly iu takiug im¬
mediate act.ou up u a the robber tariff is
unnecessary siucc this was unu of the
principle grounds upon which it came lu¬
te power.
Only a few applications for offices have
been sent in and we can state there came
aleug with these a request to reduce pay
of the office titty per cent, l’resideut

The precarious condition of the nations

extravagance, left upon the democratic
administration the necessity of calling
