We clip the following extract from an oration delivered at the University j of Georgia by W. L. lladney, of La Grange, one of the students of that in- . stitution, and published in the Athens i Watchman of last week. They are il- a j fit tribute to one of Georgia’s most j lusinoub lnatriona sons. «,ne I . Referring to the great men whose j qualities haye made them exemplary in I private as well aspublic life. He says : "Among this class of individuals in Georgia, tew—yea, ndh«—are better entitled to a respectful, a grateful re¬ membrance than John Milledge, the ever memorable benefactor of learning, born in Savaunah, Georgia, seventeen hundred and fifty-seven, just twenty four years from the landing of General Oglethorpe upon the site of the Fores', City. ‘‘As a defender of his native home, Savannah, when beseiged by the Brit¬ ish, Jasper himself did not bear a bra¬ ver part. When at length the revolu¬ tion was ended, when the colonies were declared by Great Britain to be "free and independent.” Milledge sheathed his sword, to help garner in the rich harvest of liberty, the rewaid for many bloody-fought fields. A lawyer by profession, active patri¬ otic he was well suited to the many high offices of trust and hono" to whicli his grateful country called him. As a member of the Legislature of his native State, he was vigilant and true to her ■interests. As a Congressman and Sena torj he was faitiffui to the cause of constitutional liberty, aud weii deserv¬ ed the friendship of Jefferson, the ad¬ miration of Madison and Monroe. As a Governor, the records of Georgia dur ing his administration speak sufficient¬ ly ■ But we have not time to dwell longer upon his public career; yet it would be ingratitude—base ingratitude—not to eulogize bis beneficence as a friend of {education, and especially of the University of Georgia. Let it not be forgotten that on the 29th day of Janu ray, 1880, the legislature granted to a board of trustees a charter of an insti tutifn of learning to be known as the that University of Georgia ; for fifteen years institution existed only on paper, and might have continued to so exist to the millennium had it not been that in the year 1801. Gov. John Milledge gave to the board of trustees six hun¬ dred aud forty acres of land, on which a part of the city of Athens is now built and then are’ ...-re i oe Universi¬ ty sprang into exist i : :e. Ttiis, ladies and gentlemen, was true patriotism—wise statesmanship wor¬ thy of ttie time of Washington, of Jef¬ ferson and of Franklin. ‘Yes, when we consider the glorious results that have accrued to Georgia in ttie past, and will accrue to her in the future from this memorable institution of learning ; an ! when we remember that Governor John Milledge first set the example of contributing to its es¬ tablishment, we cannot, as true, patri¬ otic Georgians, admit that any honor paid to his name aud to his memory is beyond his deserts. There is not one of the long line of distinguished |iudividuals who have drunk of this hallowed fount of learn¬ ing, that will not with ns to-day say of Miiledge : -‘Fiona semper virnt.’’ <;tt »)ut Doors.
