prompt payment of their subscriptions.

gome of otir subscribers complain that
they do not regularly receive their papers
Whenever this occur* it would oblige us
greatly if they would Inform us of the
fact. We wish to fix the blame where it
belongs.
Are You a Subscriber ?
A number of years’ experience in the
newspaper business— in one connection
and anothei—has clearly demonstrated
to us that there is hut one successful
wav in which any newspaper can lie
conducted, and that is a strictly
cfifth bams. 7o our subscribers, there¬
fore, we wish to say a few words. In
the management of a successful news¬
paper depends its life. Its expenses are
numerous, and It requires grea. care
and close attention to accomplish any
beneficial results. Knowing this we
have adopted an iuviolablo rule. Wc
believe our paper to be worth the price
asked. Our terms hereafter will he
'pnaittvely cash in advance.
Those who are in arrears lor past
subscription we will give till the first
day of January for them to pay their
indebtedness. If not paid by then the
subscription books will he overhauled
and delinquent names dropper! from the
lists. We cannot afford to longer in¬
dulge them. Every issue we print is
expensive and we positive!* will not
send it gratis for the simple sake of a
name on our books. Of course, many
may think that a few dollars they owe
is nothing nor will it cramp the man¬
agement if it is not paid. But where
there are seven or eight hundred names
owing from $1.60 to $4.50, it amounts
to a large thing with us.
And again. As soon as a subscriber’s
year is out the paper will be stopped.
In order to give notification, however,
a blue X mark will bo put opposite Ins
name for a few numbers prior to Its
■ea^Tatlon* By this moans lie will un¬
derstand that Ins subscription is nearly

everybody, vNth< any discrimination
whatever. Conducting a new*pai>cr is
a business, and we shall conduct Tint
Democrat on strict business princi¬
ples. All, therefore, who are iu arrears
or whose time Is «early out need ex¬
pect no indulgence from us.
