The streets of Atlanta are filled daily
with dense crowds of visitors, and ev¬
ery departing train is packed to dis¬
comfort. I write this on a train of
tiyelvfe cars, every one of which is full,
and many are unable to Obtain seats.
Travelling to and from Atlanta at
this tune, is a sort of martyrdom. I
am now enjoying the luxuries of the
smoking car. A dim lamp it )umi
nates the scene and I am surrounded
hv gentlemen from the rural districts.
Tim neighlmr liehtud me fills the ail
with the fragrance ot ,m ancient pij*e.
The witty young man in fmni indulges
in hrdiianL hits at. the train hand or
the news-“butcher.” Then there is
the singing young man, with a saw
like voice, aided by a chorus of melo¬
dious friends. Resides we have the ad¬
vantage of variety. The profane, man.
the snoring man, and the very drunk
rnan give additional life and anima¬
tion to the scene. Last am. hy n1>
means least is the appreciative young
mat* who makes tii« night hideous
with laughter at tho sallies of his wit¬
ty fit ml, or the highly inteiesling
freaks of less gifted companions. All
this Is known as “fun.” Of co r se
the main ingredient of tli • “i'un'' is
the mean liquor fur which Atlanta is
famous. This car and its occupant is
it fair s.irnfdo of dozens ivnich ietve tin
city daily. How iiispitiug the sur
roundings ! A rock thrown in at one
of the windows Is a striking remind r
of the hazards of traveling and
composure to the mind. This amuse¬
ment is becoming a matter of frequent
occurrence, and the next legislature
would do well t.i make it a felony. It
m now furnished simply its a misde¬
meanor.
The railroad does its best for the ac¬
comodation of visitors, I know of no
more accomodating mid gentlemanly
class of official* anywhere than the
(conductors of the Georgia Hail road.
Tlit* management may well he congrat¬
ulated on their good judgment in the
selection of efficient employees.
