THU EN D Ob' JOY.
What is the end of joy if pain
So surely follows after
To dim the eyes with certain stain
Now running o’er with laughter?
But oh ! the flower is sweet to-day
The bounty large that lends it :
We’ll taste the blossom while we may,
The crab when Nature sends It.

tribute to the memory of Colonel Waddell,

“It would look like presumption in me to
attempt a pen portait of Janies T D. Waddell , , ,,
to one like yourself, so capable of judging

and so intimately; and knows so many of
the hues and phases of this brief mortality,
I read what you wrote and said, and the
tributes of those when the bar of Ovawford
ville paid the hinors to Miles W. Luvis
last. year. Waddell was there. But you
did not then by prophetic vision discern
the flood of a grief, just behind the thin
curtain, . ... that . to . hurst , , upon the , host

of loved and loving friends be was to leave.
Much that was then said of Lewis is true
in fact and spirit of Waddell. Like Lewis,
nobility in heart and soul was his heritage,
and true as lie was to his idol, he clung to
it amid all the changes of peace and war.
Ease, affluence;hardships,privations,health
and affliction; and I am prepared to hear,
stood to it until the trial of approaching
death, It has been but a short time since
his noble and devoted wife, my cousin

to console him, I received in response a !
letter tender and affectionate, in most !
touching and saddening strains, wherein
lie had world" expressed^ withourffei. the lone desqlateness in j
the Tills leads me to v

his wife. He was affectionate by nature.

The public had opportunity in his early |
manhood to realize his powers as an orator.
But to his friends in social life was re

describe. I join you heartily in what you !
say of his deep, strong and generous
friendships. What lie might have been, ]
and what he might have achieved if
placed in a proper and official position is
with him as with many of his brilliant !
contemporaries—a mattor purely of specu¬

land, the capabilities to serve the country
in high and responsible situations far ex

peace and repose of private life.
You and I are remote from liis home
circles. For myself it would be a sad but
still desirable office to try to console them
if in my power to do so.
I trust you will pardon me for writing
so much upon our mutual friend. An
effort is required to stop the pain and sup
press the thousand things I can truly say
of him.
Five Years Old.
With this number The Democrat
enters on its sixth year. It is our wish
and our intention in the year to come
to make it more acceptable to the peo
pj e than ever. We hope that every
man in this county will lend us their
support, for in the success of its news¬
paper depends the whole success of the
county itself. Let every subscri ber ex
ert himself to increase our list.if its on¬
ly one, name. We give a good paper
let the county give us a good support
By this time 1883 we hope to say that
we have on our subscription list at least
2,500 names, and if everyone will exert
himself, we can have them.
