By far the largest number arrived at
New York, the figures of the Bureau of

total arrivals for 1881 were 400,871; the
next on. the list in point of numbers is
Huron, Mich., where they aggregated

where the arrivals were relatively heavy:
Baltimore, 40,017j Boston and Charles¬

It is worthy of note that the
greater part of the immigrants are men
under 40 years of age, or, in other words,
of men who, if they remained ia Europe,
would be subject to military duty. It
has been estimated by careful stat.iidi

since 1820 up to June 30, 1881, Ireland
and Germany have furnished over

An attack has been made upon the

The celebrated Dean Aldrich was the
•lave of his pipe. There is a story in
the biography erf John Phillips, the poet,
which not only amusingly illustrates
this weakness on the part of the Dean,
but gives a curious glimpse of the free
• and easy way in which the dons and un¬
dergraduates of those days used to live.
A senior student laid a wager with one
i of his college chums that the Dean was
at that moment smoking his pipe, that
instant being about 10 o’clock in the
morning. Away, therefore, he went to
the deanery, where having made his way
the Dean’s study, he explained the
reason of his appearance at so early an
tour. “Ah,” replied the Dean, with
the utmost coolness, “ you have lost
your wager, for I am not smoking but
filling my pipe. ”—From Temple Ear.

of popular interest: Dr. ,T. F. Speck,
who is connected with the Wilmington
Every Enening, speaks rather enthusi¬
astically of St. Jacobs Oil. Dr. Speck
states that he uses the Oil in his family
as a household remedy, a sort of univer¬
sal panacea for all aches and pains, and
has always found it to act most happiiv.
His attention was called to it by the
many testimonials in its favor, aud he
one day used it upon himself for
throat. Two applications wore, sufficient
to effect a cure. He also used it on his
little girl for sore throat with gratifying
success. The same child had scarlet
fever this winter, which left the tendons
of one leg much contracted. The litfle
prattler couldn’t walk without assistance
and suffered much inconvenience and
pain. Several applications of St. Jacobs
Oil restored her limb to its normal con
dit.ion, and she-has not experienced any
trouble since. Dr. Speck states that he
has also seen the Oil aet charmingly in
toothache. He thinks St. Jacobs Oil is
a sterling remedy, and does not hesitate
to recommend it for rheumatism, etc.
