house burned on the night of the 2nd.
Eight hales ot .cotton, two good gins,
and live or six rolls of bagging were
burned with the bouse. Also a good
screw press was destroyed. On ac¬
count of iovv water Mr. Miller bad en¬
gaged the Messrs. Chapman, of War¬
ren, to do bis ginning with theirengine,
and they were to have commenced Mon¬
day. Some of bis tenants were hauling
in their cotton during the day before
the burning at night. It is conjectur¬
ed that they while enjoying a smoke
dropped a coal of lire into the cotton,
and in tins way carried it into the
bouse. When lirst discovered, about
half after seven o'clock, the fire was all
within the bouse, and near the gin
where the cotton bad been placed, and
bud made such headway that it was
impossible to save anything. Mr.
Miller estimates tlie loss at one thou¬
sand dollars. So much for cully’s
smoke.
