CRAWFORD VILI A n J DEMOCRAT.
Volume 8»
Communicated. HIUVER
DR. S. G.
On the second Saturday in this
month, Dr. S. G. Hillyer, visited
Crawfordville. He came in response
to a call to be present at, .and to assist
in the ordination of the two newly
elected deacons in the Baptist church,
of this place, Mr. Ross Gunn and Dr.
R. J. lteid. Dr. Hillyer preached an
excellent sermon on Saturday and ap
other on Sunday. As a matter of course,
both were well received by the hearers ;
but the oue on Sunday, taken in cou
tiection with the occasion, the install
ing of the deacons in their office, was
peculiarly appropriate and forcible and
delivered with all the earnestness ot
one whose whole soul is consecrated to
the great work of the ministry. The dis
bourse was founded upon the doth and
27th verses of the 20th chapter
of Mathew, '"But whosoever
will be great among you, let
him be your minister. And whosoever
will be chief among you, let him be
your servant.” After plainly showing
to all, the duties and responsibilities
connected with the otlice of deacon ;
the preacher strove most earnestly to
impress upon the minds of the u ®*ly
installed church officers, the tact that
the road or way to true greatness ni
the Kingdom of Christ leads through
the valley of humility- olu
Dr. Hillyer preached in the same
church as pastor over twenty years ago.
At the beginning of the war he preach
ed to our volunteer soffiier boys,
just going forth to battle ;
what changes have taken
place since then ; and what memories
must have come up before him as his
mind reverted to the past. How
changed the faces of some, how sad tne
absence of others, who then listened to
him! Crawfordville . regarded .
The people of
Dr. Ilillyer with the warmest feeling
of veneration and love in days
gone by ; and the feeling seems only
etrengthed by the many years of sepa
ration. * accompanied . the doctor,
Mrs. nillver her
and those who were thrown m
company were impressed with the met
that she was indeed a helpmeet for her
■venerable husband.
Long may they both live to work to¬
gether for the Master, and to illustrate
on earth tiie highest type of Christian
virtues.
