CRAWFORDVILLE, GA., FRIDAY, JULY 4th, 1884,
ALLAN PINKERTON DYING.
l4le Heriiarkahte Ckrecr of the Most
Able Detective tu America.
Within the sound of the waves of
Lake Michigan, in one of the quietest
streets ot Chicago, the best known de¬
tective in America lies dying. This is
Allan Pinkerton, the founder Of Pin¬
kerton’s detective ageney, now in the
seventy-fifth yeai of his age, of w hom
all hopes of recovery were abandoned
last night by his family, who gathered
around the death-bed, at No. 554 Mon¬
roe street, in that city. JThe life of this
sdent man reads like a romance from
the pen of the elder Dumas; Mr. Pin¬
kerton was born in Glasgow, Scotland,
where his father was serjm’nt of police,
the lie was of apprenticed 22 years to j proper, prominently and at
ago fehcerned the
among tin agitators which culminated in
chartist movement,
iu the Birmingham riot and the arrest
and eonvictou of several leaders, who
wefe sentenced to death. Feeling him¬
self a marked man, Pinkerton married
a young woman to whom he had been
engaged from boyhood, and sailed se
CteUy for America in 1842. The vessel
Was wreckon on Sable Island, and he
was left there in a destitute conaitiou.
Poverty, however, he not his
Pinkerton, and States, soon made establishing way
to the United Illinois, a
cooperage at Dundee, where he
built up a thriving trade. At this
time but little money was in circula¬
tion in the west, and the want was
supplied by the checks of the Milwau¬
kee Fire and Marine insurance compa¬
ny. These passed curreut aud were so
easily imitated that a large number of
forged checks soon Hoot ed the country,
It was here that Pinkerton did his
first piece of detective work. He struck
a clue to John Gray, a very skillful
counterfeiter, of Vermont, and leader
of the gang, whom lie put in jail. It
was the arrest of Gray that first
hri ught Puikeiton into public notice.
\V bile carrying on this investigation he
was t wice shot, once coming near los¬
his life.
Among Pinkerton’s early detective
exploits was the apprehension and con¬
viction ot Augustus Stuart ^Byron, the
illegitimate son of Lord Byron by Ma¬
ry Stuart, and a young man named
Napier, nephew of Admiral Napier, of
the English navy. These parties
wrecked the train on the Michigan
Southern and Northern Indiana rail¬
road, and plundered the mails of a
large amount of money, which at that
time was carried in large quantities by
the government in the absence of ex¬
press facilities.
When President Lincoln took office
PiHkertou was called to the secret ser¬
vice, in which he remained several
years. At the breaking out of the war
Pinkerton delected a plot to assassi¬
nate President Lincoln at Baltimore
on his way to Washington to he inaug
urated, and carried the President from
Philadelphia in the'white house so se¬
cretly that it was known to hut few'
persons. engaged in tracking the
While
Jauns boys iu Missouri, Pinkerton lost
live men in one year, all killed by the
James brothers. He claimed that lie
would nave run them down if id Gover¬
nor Crittenden given him the, advan¬
tages afterwards accorded to other
parties. TuC credit of the wdrk of
breaking up the Molly Maguires in tile
Pennsylvania co**l regions is due to
P'ukerton’s Philadelphia office, and
covered a period of eight years:
Detective Pinkerton lias written
many hooks, among which the best
known are|“The Spy of the Rebellion,”
“The Molly Maguires,*’ Professional “Tramp
Thieves and Detectives” and
Life.” With Alllan Pinkerton’s death
would be removed the sword of Damoc¬
les, which unknown to the world, hangs
over the heads of several men of high
station ir: public life.
