A LIFE OF TOIL.
The following sketch from the pen
of Mr. JL. L. t Yeazey, appeared , , u.
tbe Sunny South, of June?,
and was intended as a portrayal of the
Ufe and character of Mr. Warren An
drews, > an aged a and a u- highly iu respected
citizen, of Greene county :
Some weeks since, we of the twin
stars, spent a day with a friend who
has “seen you weary winter sun twice
forty times return,” but who retains a
large share of health and vigor, and
still has a relish for life and its enjoy
ments. Like most of those who have at
tained to his advance age his thoughts
and his talk are much with the past,
He delights to speak of his struggles
and his triumphs,of the difficulties with
which he has had to contend and the
success which he has achieved, of those
who looked with unsympathizing cold
ness upon his efforts and of those who
helped him with word and baud. Over
all this long period of labor he looks
without much of regret or sadness; for
in the main his life lias been a success
ful one. True it has been one of se
vere and almost unmitigated toil. Be
ginning at the very bottom, and pock
etiug no dishonestly won dollar, tiiead
vance was necessarily slow. Once and
again did the failure of friends for
whom he had pledged his his name, con
sign him almost back to standing
point. In these extremities he neither
lost courage nor turned his thoughts to
questionable schemes of getting. He
applied his hand to the plow with all
the more resolution. A wife, comely
as it chanced, yet selected not for her
comeliness, but for her sterling virtues,
proved an invaluable comfort and help,
Year after year they planted; gradually they cul
tivated; they gathered, and
their stock and store increased. Not
daughters and a sons, weie uiTiTte coming to be
fed and clothed, responsibility aud the piospect left ot
this increase of no
room for remission of effort. As soon
as the light permitted, the brave-heart
ed and strong handed farmer was atield,
and and his ms labor Moor continued o until approach- /
darkness ordered him to . his house ,
ing; Otten, s<ud he have

I run to the spring for a dri.ik of water
and then ran back to my plow.” In the
meanwhile his good wife was equally
busy, spinning, weaving, sewing, wash¬
ing and cooking—for she would have
scorned the proposal to summons aid in
any of these housewifely tasks. Iu
these pursuits of honest industry and
in the practice of temperance and fru¬
gality there was uo small measure of
happiness. Well directed efforts tilled
storehouse and barns, and their plen¬
ty they enjoyed in quietness and peace.
Were you to ask this aged couple if
they had found life worth living they
would gaze upon you in astonishment.
Thev have never discussed the question.
They found certain duties lying before
them and they have discharged them
faithfully* nobly. In courting the
earth for its fruits they increased the

CRAWFORDVILLE, GA., FRIDAY, JULY 18th, 1884.
' “Forgive ana Forget."
If a>i persons would forgive and for
« get what a great increase there would
0 in the happiness of this life. Oppor
Unities for revenge would no loDger
sought or desired. Many dark
which arise iu our moral skies, pro
duced by malice, might be instantly “1 will re
moved b y those musical words
forget and forgive. Excited passions
would be quieted and there would
kind words and cheerful hearts. Me
often hear the expression I cau uu
give, but I cannot forget.” If we
ly forgive, then to forget is a natural
result. When we speak of forgetting a
wrong we do not wish to be understood
to say that all remembrance of it is en
tirely obliterated; but that the mind is
so occupied by better thoughts of friend
ship and love that the thought remains
in oblivion until some circumstance
produces a recollection of it, but when
it does recur to the mind it has not
power to excite any feeling of disple is
ure. With such regulation of our
thoughts and passions, our lives will
contain less gloom and more sunshine.
Our hopes may be raised up to the verge
of bright realization ; our ambition be
made the highest and most ennobling;
our faith be made strong, all bound as
the golden chain of love—the fruit of
forgiveness, and our bai que will glide
ovei the unseen hand of the Orauipo
tent; it will guide us past all danger,
and as we near the shinning shore we
shall see the Golden City which will be
our Eternal Home. We may forgive
and forget.—Augusta Evening Nesvs.
